Where's Waxed?

I don't set myself up at all as THE person in the know in Hobart, and on the cutting edge of all things hospitality-related, but I DO try to make sure I know what's happening round the traps, and where I can eat the food I enjoy most, at a price I'm happy to pay at any given point in time.

Hence my confusion on reading todays Merc front page article about Ben Morrison's abduction in 1994 from his Mt Nelson home, and their interview with him about same.

They photo'ed him at his "busy Sandy Bay restaurant, Waxed".

Given I've lived in the Sandy Bay area for 12 years, and in Hobart itself for 58 years; read The Merc every day; walk round the Sandy Bay area frequently and always look at my surroundings to take notice of changes - my question is - where the hell is this busy restaurant, Waxed?

No one has ever mentioned it to me. I have never seen it advertised.

Is it a new-ish name for somewhere within the Mayfair pub?

I don't know. I looked in the phone book but there's nothing under "Waxed".

Can anyone help me here, please? Has anyone been there?

Rita, I must confess that I hadn't heard of Waxed, but an internet search produced the following:

Waxed Restaurant
5 Gregory St
Sandy Bay
(03) 6223 6648

Cheers

I dunno either. I read it quickly and thought they were talking about Gilt, but it must be behind there?

Went to Golden Harbour last night and it was tragic in all sorts of ways. On the same entree platter ($18, 6 squid rings, 3 dumplings, 3 cigarette size spring rolls) were 'squid' rings that did not come from a calamari any time recently sitting next to highly flavoured fresh panstick dumplings - obviously home made and redolent with fresh ginger and coriander. Wonton soup fabulous except for the seafood extender shredded throughout. Maybe that's authentic?? I must ask Hung at the Asian grocer next time I'm there.
Service was seriously sluggish, with early arriving dishes cold before the rice arrived. Main courses were expensive but huge, terrific value if you like volume- - as a table of six I think we left more than we ate.

Thanks Pedro - you can tell I'm not a child of the eighties who automatically Googles when she doesn't know something!
I'll look out for Waxed in Gregory St.

Hi Kitty - I too thought they must have been talking about Gilt, at first.
Re your meal at Golden Harbour - what a disappointment. I must admit, with the odd few good reports about it recently I was looking at toddling off there soon, but I'm now thinking twice about that.

I watched a bit of last weeks SBS Heat in the Kitchen, where the offsider of the food critic, who was often sent out on "tasting" assignments because the real critic is frequently recognised, explained how they have to go to great lengths to do an honest review of a restaurant, so that the meal & service they review is typical of what's going on in the restaurant, not a specially tailored dish/service for the critic.

The 'man' himself said in a situation where he's getting fawned on bigtime by the waitstaff etc, he picks out a separate table to his, nearby, & watches the service they receive, and listens to their comments about the food, and reviews their meal, not his own!

I'm thinking that in the case of GP, he's such a well-known guy, you'd have to assume that when he goes to a restaurant, he'll be assured of getting the best of service & food, no matter whether he's reviewing it or not. Just in case!

So - I could assume the reason he gave Golden Harbour such a glowing review could have been for the above?

Whatever; it sounds pretty crappy there, from your meal description & I detest seafood extender. I see absolutely no reason for its invention. I'm not jumping up & down about venturing along to Golden Harbour.

Sounds like Whiteys kind of place though - if value for money is your raison d'etre!

I was also wondering where 'waxed' restaurant was .... obviously lack of marketing and promoting here (hint hint for the owner) anyways the true foodies will certainly check it out in the future.

Just wondering if anyone had checked out the new 'Enjoi' takeaway and bottle shop in Blackman's Bay yet?

I have tried a couple of times in the last 2 weeks, the fish is great. Very fresh. Hamburgers, well I think the idea of the grill is too use it, rather then pre cook the burger and then place in the mircowave to heat and then finish on the grill is taking the idea of a fresh burger a little too far.

Tried the Calamari goujons, the idea of sliced calamari, a touch of salt and pepper and finished with lime and chili didn't sound to bad, but the thickest cut chewy calamari that is bland well......, I wonder if they if they have even tasted this item before selling it to paying customers.

Well time will tell, certainly a market for this takeaway, however they need to get it right to last the distance. The decor of this and the bottle shop is terrific, I wish them all success, don't forget to taste before you sell. Also selling Vahalla ice cream yummm.

Went to Rendezvous today, couldn't believe they were selling Movenpick ice cream, interesting not to be promoting Tassie ice cream in the middle of Salamanca's tourist walk!

Anyway bought back memories of working and living in Switzerland and Movenpick being a huge francaise there, has really great ice cream, I didn't try it today, but I am hoping that my memory of that that ice cream will be that great next time I am pass that way.

Anyone tried it?

Welcome HB. I haven't been to Enjoi yet. You gave it a mixed report so I'm thinking I'd leave it a while before I went there. Let them iron out any problems, give them a chance to hopefully listen to feedback & complaints, and rectify these things.

Rendezvous - where is it? I've heard the name, but not anything about it at all.
Please tell us more.

Hi Rita,
I think that "Waxed" is the old "Tower Burger" joint. Perhaps he decided to save money on advertising and decided to milk his unfortunate life experience and thought the Mercury would lap-up a bit of a "where are they now" type article -for FREE!
Cheers,
a local

Greetings 'a local'. I gather you're correct about the Tower Burger joint. If he was using your logic, it sure as hell worked well!
Look at all of us talking about it!
