Giving the greeks another go

Renewed my acquaintance with Mezethes tonight, and found it to be pretty well unchanged since last time I ate there in 2007. Food pretty average, and service varying from average to slack.

If you are going there to meet friends and catch up, it probably would be fine, as you wouldn't be focussing on the food, but if you go to restaurants sheerly for the food (like me), then it's a let down.

Its all about the party! Does Jimmy Roussos still pump out the music on Friday or Saturday nights?
When do the Greeks have to be great on service, its all about the atmosphere!

Rita said...

Thanks for your comments, both Anons. Jimmy wasn't in evidence last night, and I don't know if he still does the pumping thing these days there! The atmosphere on a rainy Thurs night wasn't much to write home about, I have to say!
And, despite the statement about Greeks not needing to be great with their service, well, my logic is that if it's a restaurant (as opposed to my kitchen at home), that automatically infers table service, as opposed to me getting up and helping myself to food and drinks! Hence they also need to be customer focussed, as much as any other restaurant.
But - as I said in the post, if you went there for a night with friends, you'd probably be happy with the atmosphere, food and service.

I've had 2 meals there in the last 3 months and had no problems with service and food was generous and delicious. Perfectly cooked quail and octopus. Lamb and goat dishes were a little fatty but tender and had a good crust of rigani flavour.
Salad ingredients were fresher than most eateries in Hobart.
We all walked out full of good food, wine and happiness.
Sorry you weren't.

A lot of food on that plate babes!
I must say I found eating there a complete disappointment but put it down to just having returned from Greece...you know how it is!

Have to agree the food is sloppy and cooked with no care.. it is busy cause there are so many people in Hobart that have no idea what good food is they are just happy cause they got a plate over full of food.

Anonymous said...

well if there's alot of people who are happy then they must be doing something right.

I've had both great service and great food there - but I know others who haven't. Maybe it's a bit hit-and-miss, and I've just been lucky. It's a bit of a favourite for work lunches as they have no problem letting everyone pay separately. And because one of my work colleagues has Celiac's disease and they always know what she's talking about and what is and is not OK for her to eat. Actually I remember one time we went and everyone's food was great - except one person who seemed to have the dregs of something (although it apparently tasted good), but as it wasn't me with the below-par food it was just amusing. ;-)

Rita's unfortunately in hospital at the moment. I know you will all wish her the best as she recovers from what looks like heart failure and a heart attack.

Thanks everyone for your caring thoughts and wishes. I have checked out of cardio ward at RHH and am curently being 'babysat' by Nellie, who wants to keep an eye on her mother (and maybe get back at her mother! The shoe is now well and truly on the other foot! Don't you just hate it when time and age catch up?)
Victor and Reb - can't wait to catch up with your recent adventures.
Lee - I miss you
Steve - what can I say - you are THE most thoughtful and caring friend. My enduring love and gratitude to you, Cate and the family.
Paul - I know, I know - but I had to do SOMETHING while stuck in bed!
Cartouche - despite the fact that I haven't the faintest clue who you are, it's crazy how close I feel to you. Simply.. thanks.
Simon - if you had made that offer 24 hrs ago, you would be trotting up Liverpool St with a plate of food as we speak, let me assure you of that! I appreciate the offer, and the sentiment behind it.
Bri and TG - my blogging brain is itching to resume, so I don't think it will be too long before that happens again!
Victor - your offer of t/a Asian was wonderful too btw - not that I would like a repeat of the last few days, but can I call you next time please? x

Glad you managed to escape the Rabbit Warren Rita. Now relax, concentrate on getting better and gather your strength. If you need someone to get you stuff at the Drysdale Christmas store let me know, I will be there with bells on (1 day post thesis, I will be insane enough to thump old ladies out the way)

PS the word verification on my comment was "lastsin" - let's hope that's not prophetic :)

Kind of ironic that you eat a very fatty and greasy meal and then suffer a heart attack.

Anonymous said...

Last anon. Look up irony. Understand what irony is, then comment.

Anonymous said...

2nd last anon. What a particularly callous comment. Are you suggesting Rita deserved her hospital stint? Good grief, what kind of person are you?

Hi Rita,

All the best for a quick recovery - take care of yourself.

You have all provided me with superb entertainment with your comments, above, at those times when I haven't had the energy to do anything else other than read something which doesn't require too much concentration. I thank you one and all.
TG - a lovely offer, and one which startled me as I had emailed, before reading your comment here, to Kirsten asking if she could put me aside an item or two at the Drysdale Xmas shop! So if I hadn't been reassured that my wishes could be granted, I would have taken you up on that very generous offer.
Victor (and others who saw the obvious irony between my last post and current situation) - yes, I admit I got a laugh out of that as well!
Cartouche - considering my brain seems to have gone to mush this week (like 'baby birth brain'!), I couldn't begin to guess where/when I might have met you! My only hope is that I was well-behaved when I met you!
Frogpondsrock - thank you
Christina and lovely Phil - what can I say? Out of all my readers, I was wondering when I would hear from you, my dear friend....thanks for your wishes...now get back to your pre-Christmas festivities, and have one or two on my behalf! (That's MEALS, not drinks!!)
Anon2 - our annual get-together is looking shaky this year, but let's not be pessimistic! An alternative venue would probably be preferable.
Simon....thinking, thinking....
AOF - thanks so much, and, yes, sometimes those words in verification make me laugh!
Anon - you are so correct to point that out. What I omitted to say in that post about Mezethes was that the particular platter of food in the photo actually fed 3 of us on the night, plus I took the remainder home for my daughter, who had it for supper!
We had previously had 2 entrees, shared between 3 of us, so had just ordered that meaty platter, with the promise that if we were still hungry afterwards, we could order something else. Obviously we didn't need to order more food!
I only managed to eat one lamb chop, and 2 chips off the plate.
Maybe heart-stopping food, but no different to other evenings meals.
But...things are changing here with Rita (as do all things in life!)...
Steve - thanks for speaking up.

Oh LC - I forgot to thank you. So sorry - told you my brain was going to mush! Hope all is going well for you up there? I assume you're still there? Many bookings for the Xmas/New Year?
