I went here in May, it was freezing cold, had terrible service and a terrible ambience. After all the great reviews I had received, I thought the food was terrible.

My husband and I recently went to The Bund in Shanghai. I've had lots of great Chinese food in my life (outside Australia), and my husband has little experience of Chinese food beyond what is on offer in Tasmania: we were BOTH impressed by the food, service, and presentation of food. And listening in on a mobile phone conversation of a Chinese neighbour (no on purpose - really!) although the food does not necessarily represent what you would normally expect from Shanghai, even they were impressed with it.

Hi Rita,

I just wanted to leave a quick note about a great meal I had with the my visiting parents and brother at the Bund in Shanghai last week!

The service was brilliant, we ended up being later than we thought (due to all the highway roadworks) and while I rang ahead to let them know they were wonderfully accomodating. I'm not sure if it was the owner or manager who seated and looked after us, but little things like remembering my name after we had spoken several times on the phone were really appreciated.

We all had two courses, a starter and main, and all of us were really impressed! Both my brother and I had different versions of duck (which we LOVE) and I don't think any of us stopped raving about how good the food was the whole time we were eating!

Anyway, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend (and have been all week since) a visit!

Cheers,

Emma

Quite often these establishments pride themselves in 'styling' themselves as an upmarket, authentic Chinese (whether Shanghai, Szechuan etc)but actually smacks of western influence as was the case of the Bund. I source authentic 'Chinese' restaurants off the usual touristy/generic scene. However when I'm back in town I like to experiment a bit and tried the 'Bund' Although the hostess was most friendly, the food was a bit bland...something I don't attribute with Chinese cuisine at all. And at the prices they charge I think you are better off going elsewhere. That being said I am being a bit harsh as I have eaten in better and cheaper establishments but something must be working if they have been there for a few years now.
