Mid-East in Moonah (Sunday Tasmanian 4 May 2008)
Graeme Phillips
The reality is somewhat less grandiose than the name in what is essentially a takeaway
with bain-marie food and a few stools for eating in at a narrow counter.
But, with the exception of the Taste of Persia, Little Salama and some of the food at
the Mullet Cafe in Carlton Beach, this is the only place I know of in town that offers a taste of the Middle East.
Here the tastes run from hommus and tabouli and fatoch salads through kibe and falafel fingerfood
to tuna tagine, chicken magrabiya, char-grilled lahme (meat and chicken skewers) and, of course,
those tooth-achingly sweet baklawa and namoura (semolina cake) desserts.
Nadia Elsamrani and her husband moved from Sydney and opened their small shop three months ago.
Everything is made fresh and cooked in-house, including the extraordinary time-consuming kibe and desserts.
Many of the dishes change daily and you are entertained by belly dancing on a wide-screen
TV while waiting for your order.
While the food is fine, don’t expect it to rekindle memories of the old Ali Akbar.
This is true Lebanese home cooking.
Also, the King has suffered the same fate as too many of our ethnic eateries in having to
compromise authenticity and pull back on what Nadia says are the normal amounts of things like garlic,
lemon and olive oil following customer complaints that the flavours were too strong.
As I’ve said before, we get the food we deserve while our ethnic places really deserve much better of us.
Prices for mains run from $5 for a small takeaway to $7 for medium and $9 for a large serving,
all accompanied by golden, tumeric flavoured rice and egg needles (yes, needles).
