A pub I frequently forget about but which I always get a pleasant surprise about is the good old Shamrock.
As it's right in the city I tend to drive past it in my haste to escape the inner city traffic, heading out to the more tried, tested and loved areas of North Hobart or Sandy Bay or Salamanca.
But - ended up at the Shamrock the other night and had a really great Roast Lamb. It was everything I wanted and needed. The lamb was done perfectly, the vegies were fresh and not overdone, the gravy was good, and the roast potatoes (the reason why everyone in the world would order a roast, surely?) beautifully crispy crunchy, just the way I love them.
You can't go wrong for $12.
I must find out who their chef is now because I know years ago it was a female and everyone used to say that's why the counter meals were so good there. Far be it from me to sexist, but I have found that when you want "soul" food (and I don't mean the American version), you want a woman to cook it! Bring it on boys! Sorry, but I only say it as I've experienced it.
Love Paul Foreman to death, worship at his feet regularly, think he deserves an Order of Australia for his food, but if I'm wanting the good old home-style roast, I'll return to Shamrock, or Maypole.
PS Any male who wants to prove me wrong - easy! Just make a roast & invite me along. I promise to be honest!

Rita dont know if this is true but i heard it was that the Shamrock has been sold and that it will be turned into a more upmarket pub. As for the roast anytime when the weather drops below sticky i will cook u a traditional smurf roast u cant go wrong
Yay Smurf! What comprises a traditional Smurf roast?
I assume that a traditional Smurf roast is blue and has big ears? Not chicken then.
Rita, I do like your "can't go wrong for $12" attitude.
Hopefully they do shopper dockets and you can get it down to $6.
my first ever job was when John and Gaylene Richmond were at the shamrock -long time ago now.
Hoabrt has to get a gastropub sooner or later..i wonder if that's the plan?
Saw busy crowds outside Ocean Child on friday - anyone been there recently?
Welcome Whitey. I can see you were on the same wavelength as me, thinking the traditional Smurf roast might be blue with big ears! I think I've read too many of your blogs, and am going all economy-minded as well!
Kitty - I saw John Richmond clearing back glasses from the outdoor tables at Shamrock a few weeks ago - I think he's still there?
Re Ocean Child - a few friends have eaten there recently & given it rave reviews, so it's next on my list to visit.
new licensee at the Ocean Child I think.
Hey Kitty, I waitressed for Mr Richmond @ the Shamrock once upon a time too. Circa 1987, I think.
Rita, I think I might agree with you about women being the Mamas of Soul Food. Perhaps it's because we tend to do the cooking 90% of the time, and simple tasty food is easier to produce. Males often (and I speak in general terms only) enter the kitchen with a flourish of self-importance and intent to impress, resulting in more complex and intricately assembled dishes (and a filthy kitchen which is conveniently overlooked).
Funny thing is though; although they like to cook the fancy schmancy dishes, blokes LOVE to devour a plate piled with comfort food. Like bangers and mash. Or roast lamb.
Nellie
Bangers and mash it is for tonight then. I bin a bad, bad girl on eBay and need to atone for my sins by serving up lashings of comfort food
Howdy Rita,
Ocean Child. New paint job, new menus but similarly themed food, Steak etc. Not bad.
Nellie, the ol gg wrote an article on women in the kitchen & his sentiments echo yours. He agreed that women make better cooks. You are correct in saying though, it is a bit of a gereralisation to suggest that men enter kitchens with a self important flourish & set to impress.
Men may take a different approach but they also cook with the same intent to nourish & satisfy their loved ones.
The Ocean Child has some good value meals in the bar. I haven't made it out the back yet.
Toasted sandwich - $2.50
BLT with chips - $4.50
Chowder - $6.00
and quite a few other choices under $10.
Hey Whitey - remember the good old days when Counter Lunches first came in? And the great drawcard was the fact that no counter meal was over $2?
If you can't remember, you'll be glad to know I had your share!
(I can't remember exactly when Counter Meals came to Hobart. Must have been a fair time ago now).
$2? Makes me wish I could travel back in time.
