Moving round

There have been a few interesting moves round the restaurants that I've heard about lately.

Claire Falconer is now running Criterion Cafe. It's great she's back and I hope she does well there. I have loved her food in the past, most particularly at Meadowbank, and will definitely get along to Criterion and lunch soon.

Alfonso (Fonzie) from Solo Pasta has added to his empire to take on Curleys Bar (the old Tatts/Cow in Murray Street) along with sidekick Oliver Mellors, son of the well-known Ken, and lately of Drunken Admiral. I haven't noticed its resurrection, but will check it out as well soon.

Sals in Salamanca is now under the guidance of David Morgan, ex-Carlyle manager for many years. Chris and Dora Stathopoulos have finally called it a day there and will be enjoying a much needed rest.

Grape staff are all clamouring to have Easter off. Little do they realise that's the busiest time of year for hospitality places, particularly in the Salamanca area!

Bad luck to Banc and Ebb at Swansea the other night. They had closed up early last Friday night, with no clientele. Unfortunately 20-odd people who had been attending a function at that ritzy (expensive) award-winning house (Avalon) on the outskirts of Swansea rocked into town looking for food, wine & a great restaurant. All that was open was the Ugly Duckout Cafe - so that's where they ended up going. Such a shame for all concerned that they couldn't experience the beautiful food of Banc & Ebb.

Kitty, I think they were 20-odd people indeed.
Does anyone think these days they can just breeze into town and get a ``proper'' feed at the swish of a party frock.

Hadn't they worked out when their little do would be over and that they would require further sustenance?

The poor old restaurant has not a crystal ball got.
Let them eat beans.

Have to say I agree with you Sir Grumpy; they should have booked!!! Especially in a small town like Swansea. Silly gits.

I agree with both of you, Sir Grumpy & Nellie. They SHOULD have booked, but depending on the time, they could have reasonably expected at least one of the 2 to be open, on a Friday night. If it were me, I'd take the punt, but it wouldn't be, because I'd call in advance.

Hi Rita
Re Curleys
I'm not sure I could go there..it's where Heckle and his mates make a bee line for 3 nights a week, particularly if the Scientists of Modern Music are playing - although there is little chance of overlap, I am never likely to be anywhere at 2am except beddy-bo-bos.
I think it's hard to get a good lunch in the CBD, and sometimes don't fancy trawling Salamanca, any recommendations?

Kitty, sounds like Criterion Cafe might be worth lunching at; I'll be making a stop off there for breakfast I think. We should catch up for coffee/late breckie there one day.

Rita, you could come too, if you're free?

Hi Nellie & Kitty
I think lunch at Criterion is a definite goer - tell me when & I'll be there.

Kitty - re lunch places - I'm continually on the lookout for a good one or two. Currently there's nowhere that I'd fall over myself to get to. I have places I frequent when lack of inspiration or time is happening - Tandoor Curry House/Shamrock/Rush/Little Italy/Little Bali/the Japanese place in Cat & Fiddle Food Court (they do a great Bento box, and cooked chicken dish)/EnTHAIcing/Khow Thai are a few. It all depends on mood, how long you've got to spare, how much you've got to spend (some of those smaller places don't deal in cards, only cash, which tends to catch me cashless sometimes)

as you know, I'm free. Although the fucking AAT haven't had the decency to let me know yet, I can guess that I didn't get the gig.
(I only applied last April):)

So anytime, (unless I'm at the gym, surpressing/oppressing surfs or doing my nails) just text..

Where is EnTHAIcing? Nothing comes up in Google or the online white pages.

I am on the hunt for a great Pad Thai, and Khaow Thai's version just isn't up to scratch.
