A few other things, like Mezethes

Since I wrote about my experience at Mezethes a few weeks ago, I have heard three or four people chatting about their negative experiences there which all sound similar to mine, and Food Kitty's.

The most recent one was last Saturday night, when a group received what seemed like very average service and food, as well as being seated on that top mezzanine area next to the entrance to the toilets. Hardly conducive to sticking round when you're enjoying the ambience of the dulcet sounds of peoples insides being flushed down the sewerage system of Hobart all night!

Given that the expectations of all the people with bad feedback have been at varying levels, I would say it's a reasonable assumption to make that Mezethes need to lift their game. Are you hearing us, guys? We love Greek food. PLEASE deliver for us.

Also heard from a very reliable source, but not experienced myself, about a really bad deal done at Theatre Royal pub last weekend. Scene: a Rokeby High School reunion. Person organising ordered 2 large platters worth $70 each. On each platter was: half of the area was taken up with wedges; the rest of the platter was chicken nuggets, meatballs and no dipping sauces at all.

Now, come off it Theatre Royal. That's just not on. Could I throw this idea into the ring? Maybe the thought was, "Well it's Rokeby High ex-pupils, what would they know? They probably call wedges, meatballs and nuggets 'cordon bleu' food?".

I hope I'm wrong, but I can tell you that they were not one bit impressed, and nor should they, and us, be.

Come on Hobart. Lift your game!

My husband and I visited Mezethes about 6 months ago. We really loved it. As I recall it was a week night, so not too busy but plenty of other diners about.
We actually found the service great. Served by a knowledgable and friendly young lady.
We dined banquet style and had a bit of everything. Wonderful.
But then there is the owner. Coming over, introducing himself, welcoming us and having a bit of a chat in general. Very nice actually, but then he keeps returning, and returning, for quite long periods of time really. At the time I thought it was very nice and made us feel very welcome {I love a chat!} but as my husband later pointed out, not everyone would be comfortable with this, especially had it been a romantic night out.
I too had heard good and bad about this restaurant but really needed, to try for myself.
My verdict was, a very nice meal, a little over priced, our waitress was wonderful, the owner very friendly but a little overbearing.
My friend has asked us to go with her. I will return but now with a little more hesitancy.
I LOVE GREEK FOOD.!!
I'll let you know how it goes.

Is this on the old Wooby's site?
Me, the missus and friends got the same treatment from the owner at Wooby's. Wouldn't go away. Maybe its the site or a ghost.

Christina - sounds like your night at Mezethes was the one we all want. I hope your next visit is the same. Please keep us updated.

Sir Grumpy - yes - it's the one on the site where Mr Woobys was. Perhaps there's something in the water there for the owners!

Yes!!! I've been to Mr. Wooby's too. Never really connected the two experiences before, but I know what you mean!

Theatre Royal pub's up for sale....maybe they've lost energy. I've had similar platters at a fund raiser at the Woolstore - but they were only $25 each (and not worth it at that)

back on line soon ready for lots of chat

Yay Kitty! Can't wait for you to be back online. Hope you've got lots stored up to throw open for discussion.

Had the same experience at Mr Woobys a couple of months back - I remember wondering whether he was going to take more time explaining the menu than I would take to scoff the actual meal.

Not complaining though. Enthusiasm is to be applauded.

It's curious how Mr Wooby man is either damned for this habit he seems to have acquired for outstaying his welcome at the tables in his restaurant, or, in the past, for being the most unreasonable employer around.

I have no personal experience of either. Just find it interesting.

Yes, with us Rita, he stood along and reeled off tales of his travels abroad, including a lengthy tour of Ireland with jokes, too.
We only had time for a quick word amongst ourselves before the cheque arrived (exaggerating).
The meal was fine though.

Re - Theatre Royal
They have been doing that for years. Our choir had our after party there a couple of years ago, and thats what we got...and we paid about $20/head. Only reason we went there was the hope and anchor was undergoing one of its semi frequent change of ownerships. Looks like we are going back to the theatre royal this year...I am NOT looking forward to it.

Similar experience to Sir Grumpys w8ith Mr Wooby - booked under Other Half's somewhat distinctive surname, Mr Wooby recognised it as having worked with his father many moons ago - apparently this was an invitation to discuss EVERYTHING that had happened in his life since he had last seen my FIL (before Other Half was even born)! We declined dessert, went elsewhere so we might actually be able to engage in some conversation betwixt ourselves.

@Rita, I totally agree with the service you recieved at Mezethes. I've been doing some research on other people's experiences and believe 80% of them are negative. I, myself had a meal there a few weeks ago, and could not believe the poor service we recieved. We waited closed to 2 hours for our meals (consisting of salads, dips and breads and kebabs- items which require very little skill and time) and of the 11 meals we ordered only 9 came out. Staff were not taking responsibility and would not offer discounts. This restaurant needs to be shut down. I've read reviews from people who say they contacted the manager, who doesn't seem to care much about the bad service. I'm trying to spread the word that that this place deserves no one's money and there are so many more fabulous eating destinations in Hobart. I have recieved better service at McDonalds, and from a vending machine. At least the vending machine says sorry when it does something wrong! The staff at Mezethes were just awful.
