Takeaway from Flathead last night was superb. I selected the chargrilled octopus with fries and greek salad (and cynically wondered how they would manage to stuff this up) at $19.90.
It was quite expensive for the size of the serve, but as I was prepared to pay anything for the potential of having an enjoyable takeaway, I was fine with that.
As it turned out - it was indeed magnificent. When I ordered, I was informed that it would take approximately 20 minutes to do and did I have that time to spare. How wonderful to be asked that question. Customer service at it's best! And how extraordinary that I comment on it! It should be the norm but we know it's not.
This was a targeted meal from Flathead, as three people (whose tastes in food I value highly) in the last week have raved about the food there, so I needed to check it out for myself.
They also have their famous Scallop Pies for sale in the fridge, the ones worthy of an honourable mention in the June 2007 edition of Gourmet Traveller.
So - for whatever your need, be it fresh fish to take home and cook yourself, or sit down restaurant meal, or takeaway meal - get into it at Flathead. (They also do outside catering under the name of the Nosh Company - it's brilliant & I have recommended them to several business people)
PS - Rumour has it that Chris Jackman started up business again quietly last week at the Victoria Street premises. We'd best get our feet pattering in that direction asap!

Rita, I had a look in the window of this place a few weeks ago and at the displayed menu.
The missus was going bananas in the Salad Bowl and I went up to have a look after being told it was terrific.
When I went back for the missus she'd bought so much grub for lunch at Marieville esplanade that we didn't go back up.
We will now.
PS it wqs ticking over nicely when I peeked on that Saturday and one of the staff even gave me a big smile as I perused the menu from outsides the window.

By the way - have you noticed that Salad Bowl seems more expensive now? I thought it was just me buying expensive items but someone else commented on it last week, which verified something I'd been vaguely thinking over the past month. I now have decided to bypass them & go straight to Hill St, even though Salad Bowl's just round the corner from me.
I know we spend-up big in the Salad Bowl.
I once popped in just for some chilli powder and an Ayams curry mix.
My better half was in there too and soon we had spent over $65.
There was a cooked chicken, some savouries, cheese, cakes etc etc.
Next time I'll lock her in the car. (Fat chance!).
But I haven't noticed any price rises. That's because the items are usually one-offs, so it's hard to compare like-with-like over a few weeks.
I remember seeing that the Japanese bonito stock powder was $1-plus dearer than Wings at Sandy Bay.
It was a lot on an item of only a few dollars. I remarked on this to the missus. we had just been to Wing's where I had bought some.
But, I will watch from now on.

Yes - Hill Street IS too busy and cramped, but I know that & select my shopping times there to suit the quieter times.
The first time the Salad Bowls high prices hit me was a night I had one of those lolly cravings (the ones you get after you've seen an ad for something similar on TV - I hate that!). I bought a packet of lollies I usually get at the supermarket for $1.75. It cost me $3.50 or thereabouts.
Ripped off and definitely not happy!
How did your projects go Rita - all on time and under budget I hope. Had another kitchenless night last night and went with a big group to the Maypole. Two highlights - Shepherds pie (served in a big noodle bowl) and the rissoles. Go figure.
What has happened to Hobart Restaurant Bitch? She's fallen into a coma again. We need all our food bloggers.

Hi Kitty - my projects are going well - one was planned for today and am pleased that even though it had the potential to go extremely pear-shaped (due to some disasters), it actually went fine.
My next huge one requiring mega-negotiation, networking and organisational skills (all of which I obviously excel in - I've taken a leaf from your book Kitty and am hell-bent on self-promotion here!) will be on Thursday 19th July. I will be sampling Canberra's best in the 3 days preceeding that, so you should expect some feedback from one of Josie & pc's recommended food venues.
If you feel the tension in my posts in the week prior to that date - you know what it's due to.
Sir Grumps - I keep thinking that too, about HRB. You get all enthusiastic, and keep changing channels from Kitty to Gobbler to HRB to Hobart Brekky to Whitey to Smurf (and maybe to Rita) only to find maybe one new post between the lot!
What a letdown!

By the way, all those foodies who wondered what happened to Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen on Tuesday...all is well.
For some reason, Nine (thus meaning WIN) decided to drop it on Tuesday to be replaced by the movie The Castle.
While I love THe Castle, I have seen it so many times I don't care if I ever see it again.
It must be a Ratings week on the mainland or something. I suspect it was thrown in as a spoiler against Seven and Ten.
Hell's Kitchen is scheduled to be back next Tuesday. Fingers crossed.
While Ramsay is an arse, it's fascinating.
Also, because there is an ultimate winner of the series, who gets a restaurant of their own, it would be a very poor show if Nine (WIN) were not to run the series to its conclusion.

These TV stations treat us like shit and wonder why there is no station loyalty.
This is a show that wasn't a one-off episode thing, it was an unfolding story.

Hi Sir Grumps - sorry for not responding so promptly - I've been in the north of the state for a few days.
That sort of thing that the TV stations do is really annoying isn't it? I agree with you. Even though the people involved in the programs were giving me the shits, I still like to watch anything that slightly resembles a cooking program.
Chris Jackman has re-opened Choux Shop as a licensed Jackman and McRoss as of two weeks ago.

Indeed Choux has reinvented to become Jackman and McRoss, and in this caffiend's opinion, one of the best coffees in hobart.
Flathead is awesome, yet pricey fish and chips, and even better, right across the road from home.
And flathead were having a tassie wine sale last week. Good-o.
Salad Bowl changed hands a while back, and the prices have risen slightly - the South Cape cheeses are now $2.20 instead of $2.00 etc etc. Still a lovely place to shop, and Hill Street is great, but gives me the heebies - too many people, not enough space.

Several months later.... I did a search for Flathead and found this thread. I got takeaway from there last Friday night and was also very impressed with the service AND the quality of the food. I have had fish n chips from there a couple of times before and thought it good if a bit overpriced. But sadly, the one time I actually went to eat there (took my partner for his birthday) the wait staff seemed a bit experienced - when he said he would have the house wine instead of paying the $6 corkage, they assumed I was doing the same, when I had brought a good bottle of local riesling with me specifically - so although the food was superb that took the edge of the evening for me. But hey, maybe the staff have changed now and anyway it's far too good to stay away!
