So slow

Interested to hear a snippet the other day about the venture planned for the corner of Burnett & Elizabeth Streets, North Hobart - opposite Republic.

Remember I told you a few months ago that I had seen in the Public Notices of the Merc that Tas Coffee Roasters had applied for a Liquor Licence for that address?

Well of course I picked that one up well.

It is indeed Richard from Tas Coffee Roasters spearheading this venture. He is planning an all-night coffee house, complete with meals, from what I was told. Apparently it is to be named On Bar - though that doesn't sound right to me? I stand very much corrected there.

But - it still looks to be ages away from the outside anyway. It will be an interesting addition to the North Hobart scene. I drove through the main Elizabeth Street, North Hobart strip round 12.00 last Friday night and it was so deserted, apart from the usual Republic crowd.

That could be good or bad for Richard's business, depending on whether you're a 'glass half full' person or a 'glass half empty' person!

I thought to myself at the time, "Stiff if you felt like snacking at this time of night", but then again would people think to travel there for a late night snack?

I gather he's only opening specific nights to start with.

Hmmmmmm. Let's see, will we?

By the way - on my drive through Elizabeth St round the 7.00 pm mark that night, the new Nandos was unbelievably chockers! They were falling out the windows! It really was like looking at a Where's Wally picture! I can't believe people cram in and queue for that food!

rita, it's the next step for hobart, in the next 12 months, 3 more late nighters are opening and i promise in no time at all on bar (it's correct) will be heaving, IF the food is good. you won't recognise hobarts night scene in 2 - 3 years, nice, exciting things are on the way, things that will make many a person able to stay out past 11 for a decent glass of wine and jamon!!

a friend has a few plans in swing as we speak and you just might like em.

I've always been bemused by the early-closing Aussie culture, Rita.
Before I came here, I heard you guys were ``party animals''.
But it seems it's barbecue animals. A close-to lunchtime start with the footy on, eat and drink all arvo and early evening.
Then it becomes survival of the fittest as people go home or fall by the wayside up till 10pm.
A few diehards kick on.
Same with restaurants and takeaways. I couldn't believe not getting a feed after 9.30-10pm when we first arrived.
Even the takeaway fish and chip shops were closing up at 9pm.
One thing about Britain is you can go to the pub till midnight or later then exit to get a late Indian meal, Chinese, fish and chips, whatever.
I remember having the full curry with a friend at 1.30am after a big night in the pub.
I asked the waiter when closing was (as he served up an ice-cool lager to go with my food).
He said, ``Oh, around 3am, if it gets quiet.''
And you can get a full home-delivered curry. Popadums, naans, chappatis, curry, rice, pickles etc at 1.30am, if you get home from the pub and decided to kick on.
They even take cheques if they know you.
It's two areas where we are lacking...late food and home delivery choice.
One day perhaps.

Sir Grumpy
I totally agree with you re home delivery. I cant eat Pizza/pasta etc so all the delivery services are out for me. I would love nothing better than to be able to order in a nice Thai or Japanese and not have to go out.....Its one of the things I MISS about London.

Yes, don't get me wrong Rita, I'd rather have the Tassie lifestyle over London any day.
But a succulent kebab in pitta at 2am after a night out when you may have eaten early is great.
Or a tandoori platter with pilau rice at the front door at 1am....yum.
Why is it that pizza is our only home-delivery option?
It's boring after a while.
Sir Grumpy.

I agree with you guys. I've cursed Tassie for years with that thought in mind! What is so hard about home delivered other food than pasta/pizza?

You see it on US movies all the time. In that Sandra Bullock/Hugh Grant movie she orders Chinese all the way through it for home delivery. I've watched it just for the delight of dreaming about the day I too can do that!! We've emulated the Yanks in every other way, why not go the whole hog and copy that good bit?

Hey insider - give us a few more clues. Sounds really exciting though.
And you say the name On Bar is accurate? OK. I can go with that. But what does it mean?

I agree with Sir Grumpy and others. So many times have I lamented at the lack of options for us night owls. In my case I have cooked all day, and frankly balk at the thought of pizza, KFC, praties, tits and bits etc. I loath to cook when I come home often late (its a chef thing).
Yes in London, you could order out just about anything (even your own chef.. I've done this a few times). But with a population of 12million, its not surprising.
But to be honest what I miss most is the Parisian approach.
With many apartments built without kitchens (my own included) I would always eat out. The Latin quarter was alive with Bistros & Braseries that offerer the Prix du Fix menu. Three courses, typically Es Cargo or soup, steak, chicken or Fish and a chocolte mousse or Pommes du Tarte for just $20 bucks or so. The French have made this part of everyday life and the city buzzes with diners and dining options.
Here in Tassie, its either bogan food or restaurant food. Where are the quality in-betweeners, where is the Joi de vivre.
I hope North Hobart leads the charge.

Oh at last! For so long I have been yearning for a late night coffee house/cafe. Just somewhere to get something decent to eat after a night out. I know hundreds of people will be over the moon, It is a common complaint among us. So good luck to Bar on. I'm looking so forward to this.
On the topic of home delivery, even in the south west of Sydney where I had the uneasy pleasure of residing for a few years, we could get the best chinese food home delivery. When my husband and I first moved back home to Tassie, we missed it so much, and it didn't cost the earth. Please someone hear our pleas. Lets catch up bit. With the wonderful news about North Hobart we seem to be heading in the right direction at last!

I think it will be a great place for all those hospitality workers who get off work late at night and just want somewhere to get a quiet bite to eat and a glass of wine or just a decent coffee....heavens knows how many times all us poor workers decide to meet up after work and find the only places open are the welcome stranger or the bakehouse.

Rita said...

Yep - agree with all of you. We've gotta give Bakehouse and Welcome Stranger a run for their money!

there's already a quiet late night/'til midnight venue in Hobart ... the lovely Gilt lounge bar next door to the Metz in Sandy Bay (the one with the garden out the front and the nice balcony). live music Thursday to Saturday, great coffee, a damn fine hot chocolate in a bohemian cafe atmosphere. they are also licensed and have snacks on until late (never mind all day breakfasts and . rekindling the days of the original Mummys and Beaujangles, popping in somewhere after the show/concert/play/film.

Hi Might be Involved - yes, I commented the other day on blog somewhere that I had heard things lately both for and against Gilt, so I'm intending popping in there soon to check it out for myself.

Sounds interesting.

Nando's is too expensive for take away food. DO NOT EAT THERE FOR FOOD POISONING SAKE
