Gourmet palates of the future...?

I heard of an interesting (and telling) survey done the other day.

It happened in the US. A number of young people were presented with two burgers. Both burgers had, in reality, been bought at a local Maccas. One had been left in its original (Maccas) packaging, while the other one was repackaged into different wrapping, so obviously presented totally differently to the the Maccas original.

After taste-testing both burgers, all the kids claimed that the Maccas-wrapped/packaged burger was way more superior to the other one!

God help us, is all I can say about that!

What does that say about insidious brand-name inculcation in (US and increasingly our) society? I'm trying to teach my children not to have an unthinking reliance on brands and merchandising not just with food but with everything, however I fear I'm one of a small, outnumbered army.

Good one Lonie. It's left up to you younger mums (than my generation) to carry the banner of the anti-brand-name brigade. But, as you so rightly point out, I think you're fighting a loosing battle.

It's damn hard work continually reinforcing your message to kids, whatever that particular message might be. With the name-brand thing, you're not only fighting your own kids but the rest of society (theirs) as well! And we all know how effective peer group pressure is.

I always find the wrapping the tastiest bit of franchise food, Rita, Lonie.
