..for lunch today - taken there by my son, and his suggestion for the lunch venue.
I was iffy, but he was determined he wanted to try it.
So - in the sleet and squalls we ventured up to Mt Nelson, and were shown to a table with that beautiful view we all go there for.
Unfortunately the food didn't match the view. It was mediocre. Not good, not horrible. Ordinary. I always feel bad saying that, because when waitperson asks you if you enjoyed it, or if it was alright, and you say yes, it seems dishonest to then go away and say it was mediocre. But that's how I feel.
Perhaps if the question was phrased by the waitperson differently (and if they really cared what my response might be) then I would answer more honestly and literally.
I had their soup of the day, which today was Minestrone. It was a good sized bowl accompanied by 4 slices of French stick for $8.50. I suggested to waiter when he bought out the soup, that maybe some parmesan would be a nice accompaniment, which he agreed with and went off to get it. It WAS a bonus but still couldn't disguise the fact that the soup didn't have any 'grunt' or 'guts' like a Minestrone should. I tasted it, then commented to son that it tasted like a can of diced tomatoes with some beans added. He tasted it, and said it tasted like a can of diced tomatoes.
Too ordinary. No garlic. No robust flavour, especially for a day like today - cold, wet, windy, snow on mountain.
The biggest detractor though, was the fact that our waiter had THE most overpowering aftershave on, I could taste it in my soup! Don't get me wrong. I'm all for aftershave, and wish more guys would use it, but please could they be more sparing with it, especially in a food scenario?
I read a booklet recently for employees of Wrest Point directing them on how to dress to work there. The instructions were quite specific, leaving absolutely nothing to chance. Their instruction about aftershave or perfume was that you could wear it but only sparingly, with the instruction that the way to apply it was to spray it into the air, then walk into the spray.
If our waiter today had done that, I wouldn't be still smelling that lingering effect as I write now!
So - Mt Nelson Signal Station - gorgeous place to take your interstate visitors, probably great for a cuppa and cake (we'll never know because we did request the dessert menu but it never arrived...so we forewent dessert and coffee), but still as unprepossessing as it always has been, as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, Rita, Mt Signal Nelson Station reverted to a tea and cake place for us too.
And we rarely do that now. Great location but...
It is good for taking interstate/overseas visitors though. They love the view etc and a cuppa or snack is usually enough for this inner-city trip.
Sir Grumpy
No-one should wear aftershave; it's hideous. Or any kind of perfume.
Anytime.
My pet hate.
Yes Nellie aftershave and strong women's perfume. (Or women's stong perfume, rather).
Sometimes you are delicately picking up the fragrance of your jasmine rice or saffron sauce chicken curry with cardomom and fennel...when someone goes past and obliterates all this with OLD SPICE or MIDNIGHT AT THE DOCKS...
It rather puts one off one's grub.
Sir Grumpy but fragrance free.
PS. I do use a deodorant, of the lightly scented type or no perfume. I'm not a complete barbarian.
Over powering anything is horrid. For those of us sensitive to alot of commercial perfumes it ruins a good day. I actually cant walk through the cosmetic/perfume counters at most department stores without getting a hideous headache. (Hence why my perfume is from Grasse in France and lasts me forever).
Havent ever tried the Mt Nelson Signal station, but will take the warning about food.
You made it to NEw Town station Nursery yet Rita??
Why is it that so many of the venues with the best views are so disappointing when it comes to dining and service?
Maybe they think the view is enough, Sticky.
But you can't eat scenery.
Sir Grumpy
Nellie, wher you been!
Rita as a teenage boy I was obsessed with anything 'musk'. White Musk, Tiger Musk, Midnight Musk, if it had musk I was entranced. Trouble was I was too young to afford any plus I was out about ten years & it had become passe. Not being put off I convinced myself that consuming vast quantities of musk sticks may have the same ofacaltory effect seeping through my pores, sadly I was wrong & the women stayed away in droves.
Zelda - yes - I'm getting a bit frustrated now! I deliberately went without lunch on Saturday(Grand Final day), thinking that when I'd finished my shopping I'd buy my seedlings & potting mix then lunch at Express. Well, arrived there round 2.45, bought the gardening stuff, then was going to go into lunch at Express to find that he had the chairs on the tables, and was counting the till money!
Thought to self he wouldn't thank me for arriving for lunch at that stage of his day, and probably he was quiet, what with the general ghost-town atmosphere of the southern hemisphere on Saturday afternoon (see my post of Saturday!). I understand he would want to close early if there were no punters, so didn't bother entering, and will try AGAIN soon!
Re smells - I know my Nellie religiously objects to my Body Shop Tea Rose fragrance every time she sees me, but I promise I really am sparing with it. I appreciate the smell of aftershave, but only if it's not too strong. This one today would have been a pleasant smell if it hadn't been applied so liberally.
Re places with great views and poor food and service - for me, the jury's out on that one. I've had great and ghastly times over the years at the place that most immediately springs to mind in regard to views and food - Wrest Point Revolving Restaurant.
But The Springs Hotel, halfway up Mt Wellington, is a place I cherished for provision of both done excellently well. Some of my best times were spent there, in the winter, enjoying the snow, the views, the warmth of their huge log fires and the camarderie of a bunch of strangers standing round the fire warming their bums and chatting about the weather, and the hearty olden-days fare of scones, raspberry jam and cream along with a lovely cuppa. How much better could life get after that?
Gobbler - the musk sticks would have won me on their own! I would have pinched your musk sticks and left you to your own devices!
And guess what I've got in my lolly jar as we speak? Yep - MUSK STICKS! Love 'em!
Rita I have friends that went to the signal station last week said it was awful too!! I had to go to sandy bay today to stock up on the asian goodies so we decided to give a little local vietnamese joint a go...next door to wing and co....BLOODY BEAUT!! I had wonton soup great taste flavour etc,,,partner had crispy skin duck ...was very good very good value for money
That was the place that gave us a colder-than-antarctica welcome, nice.
Food was awful from baine marie...we left most of it and fled....
Sir Grumpy
Sir Grumpy - I never stray near a baine in an Asian restaurant. It's just fodder to give to the masses. Get the fresh stuff... or even better, if there's a menu in another language, order off that!
And sorry Nice, I've eaten there a few times and while not bad, I've had much better. Ok, maybe I've been spoiled, but I would dearly love someone to open a good Viet restaurant here. You're right about the value tho. Good serving size, good price.
Nothing like a good Beef Pho followed by Caprioskas on a stinking hot Summer's night.
What's caprioskas Garry?
It's OK - I googled it! Thank god I thought of that before being told by someone how archaic I am not thinking of that!
They sound delicious, and I expect one next time we meet!
How come I haven't heard of one before, especially in relation to Thai food? It would appear that drink complements Thai food, in particular, superbly.
mmm vodka, fresh lime juice, a dash of sugar and lots of ice. Absolutely, I'll make you one (or if anyone can recommend a bar here that makes good Caprioskas? Let me know). The effect of the drink is just lost when it's about the same temperature in the glass as it is outside :(
Look I've had similarly disappointing meals with superb views at Pear Ridge & at Peppermint Bay, both in the channel. I was a long time fan of the latter but no more after the last two experiences in the large room (not the bistro)
Cheers, Garry...yes I usually avoid the lottery of the baine marie but we were in a hurry that day.
Anyway, any cook worth his salt shouldn't see it as baine marie anything goes and cook-to-order I'll do a good job.
You should be able to trust the chef all the way through, but we all know by experience IT AIN'T SO (or PHO).
I won't be giving that place a second go. The lack of a friendly welcome, even a Hello, or Enjoy Your Meal, was enough to let me know the DEMEANOUR of the place.
That's the thing, I've just worked out demeanour of the staff is the overriding quality that defines the place.
If you know what I demean.
Sir Grumpy
PS maybe we should call out in these places ``Friend or Pho?''
Sir Grumpy
Just wanting to let Sir Grumpy know Pho is actually pronounced 'Fa' not 'Fo'!
Sorry SG!
Yeah, anon, but we locals call it Pho (foe).
And we pronounce Friend as Frayand.
So, it's:
``Holt, why Goose thirr, frayand or pho?''.
Then, when he doesn't get the pronounciation right (Frayand) you know it's time to shoot your water pistol.
Sir Grumpy but sober (honest)
Rita- Saturday was Steve (one of the owners) b'day - so I suspect he wanted to close up early to enjoy the day.
I was out there today at lunch and had my usual sandwich and juice along with a coffee. Nice and busy but not manic. Lots of ladies who lunch.
i know rita has blogged about it and i went on her recommendation, but for views and food pecoras at granvewe was great, also moorilla for a long lunch is too. is there any place hidden for a good pho? i'd love to know, the hubby loves a good asian soup.
Fiona - yep - my Thai girlfriends do a great one! If anyone wants to bankroll them, they'd be overjoyed to start a Thai restaurant! Naturally Rita would waitress for them! Then you'd see customer service plus! This I promise.
But you're exactly right about Pecora. It IS gorgeous there, isn't it? Views and food.
Zelda - I would have substituted Mt Nelson yesterday with Express but suspected they were closed on Mondays.
Pear Ridge - agree. I've had disappointing food there, but Peppermint Bay - has never failed for me. I love the place, the aspect, the food, and as Michael Caton's character says on "the Castle", the serenity!
Sir Grumpy - great play on words - friend or pho! You are quite a wordsmith, aren't you? Giving our Gobbler a run for his money.
Rita, on the shopping topic for AFL, I stuck a late post there for you...
Cheers, Sir Grumpy
didnt and never would eat from bain marie..
Pear Ridge bloody awful...had a meal there 2 months ago...took parents when they were here on a visit...HOW EMBARRASSING...service was bad they just kept trying to squeeze more people in food was a disgrace ...really awful..they forgot our drinks and hubby doesnt eat cheese and they gave him a spinach a fetta pie after us asking what the pie of the day was and being told it was beef...we now call it sue ridge (sewerage)...sorry for any punters that like it
niceglasso fred
doesnt that just suck, shit service but they can rush around and make up a table to fit more bums on seats, typically money driven rather than service and quality driven .shame on them!apparently award winners ,i'd like to know what for.
sorry fred just stands out in your nic and have to confess in a past life a fred was a Fucking Ridiculous Eating Device!!!
