Rita has a dilemma. Received a phone call yesterday from a friend in Launceston. He's going to be in town on Thursday night and said he'd love to catch up with me over a meal, and could I pick somewhere and book it.
I can look after myself fine. It's other people that are the hard ones to accomodate.
I thought a while then decided on Moorilla. Called up to reserve a table on Thursday night - only to find that they only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights!
Bugger! My next thought was Le Provencal. You all know how much I love a Peppered Steak there!
Called yesterday and left a message on messagebank. Julie called me back tonight to say they didn't have the time I requested available. They could do me a meal at 8.30. Unfortunately that was a bit too late, so I have had to knock that one back as well.
So - here I am - going through my own listing of restaurants reviewed over the past year and trying to think of exactly which one fits the bill.
Last time he was down, I took him to Cornelian Bay Boathouse so we can't go there.
Quite frankly I'm stumped. We don't want to pay an arm and a leg. We want to eat at 7.00 pm. Wayne will have had drinks and nibbles at some pre-Xmas drinkies function prior to dinnering. We are also looking at a gluten intolerance. That means no pasta and suchlike. We want easy parking. We want great food. We want a nice evening, and not too noisy so we can catch up and actually converse.
Are we asking too much? I'm tempted to try Salt, which I've been trying to find the opportunity to get out to, but as I haven't been there, don't know how many of the above criteria it meets.
I would be happy with, say, Chinese at Bund, or Asian at Doms or Vanidols, but not sure about Wayne. He was delighted with the Moorilla call, and sad when I called back to say it was a no go. From that I deduced he would prefer a more straightforward menu than the specificity of Asian or similar (or even Le Provencal).
Will I risk Salt? Advice anyone?

Salt doesnt have that much for GF (speaking from experience.) What about Kawasemi in Dickersons Arcade? Simple, easy and nice selection of cooked and non cooked food. There is also Smolt - nice simple food but a little expensive.
Oh yes - forgot about Smolt. Thanks Zelda - I'll call them tomorrow & see how we go. Great suggestion.
Glad I could be of use!
with your taste buds and budget, what about the china diner?
Food Nazi!
Ah Food Nazi. Back again with the little sting in the tail! Where have you been?
Having a "gluten intolerance" must be horrible.
Yes, I found Smolt a bit exxy too. I went there for my birthday (largely after reading a rave on Gobbler's blog) and quite honestly wasn't that impressed.
Did anyone see Leo Schofield's comment the other week that Hobart does really top-end stuff very well but he couldn't think of a middle-range eatery that he could recommend? Personally, Rita, I would recommend Flathead - great food, good service and not too pricey - just a bit small!
Hi Forde - yes I imagine it must be. It really seems to cut out lots of options open to you and I.
Hi Rita II. Great to hear from you again. You're the third person in the past week that I've heard say that about Smolt.
I did see Leo Schofield's article. I wanted to respond to him about a few things in it, but couldn't find any way to get in touch with him.
I agree with your Flathead call. If Wayne is inclined towards seafood, I'll suggest them too. Will leave it to him to decide.
You must let us know where you went (and what you thought!).
Off topic, but can you tell us anything about the new Dome in Sandy Bay?
Have booked Smolt! Am very interested to see what all the hullaballoo is about. Looking forward to it greatly.
Drove past Dome yesterday. Will check it out over the Xmas/NY break. Looks pretty damned ritzy! Maybe they won't let comfortable-not-glamourous Rita in the doors?
I am interested in why some people feel Smolt is a bit exxy?
Is it because: not value for money, food & bev just too pricey for what you get, overpriced for Hobart?
I hope that just because I have said that I enjoyed my two experiences there that people are not judging it too harshly, After all, I have only reviewed one other restaurant, Pecora, so its not that I am spruiking frequently.
I personally didn't think it was priced too high at all. I think they charge a realistic price for a package that is maredly differnt to whats currently on offer in Hobart.
I'll feel way more competent to express an opinion on Smolt this time tomorrow night, Gobbler!
Also am off to Launceston tomorrow for a lunch meeting at Port Hole - near Peppers, I think. Should be interesting as well.
Hi Rita
Will be very interested in your experience of Smolt. For my taste, it was a case of style over substance, and it's very noisy like a lot of the new places.
Incidentally Thin BL is coming your way!
Cheers

Where is Dome?
Where is Dome?
Dome is in King Street, Sandy Bay (two doors along from the new Post Office). I haven't seen it since it opened, but had a look inside during the fit-out and really liked the look of it. Now I just want to know about the food... will go along on Saturday.
Geez Rita II - you're really giving me a run for my money here!
Seriously - we'd love to hear back from you about it if you DO go there.
I'm up at Swansea for the weekend, so won't get the chance to check it out till after, then that's Xmas.
Thanks Anon2. I believe Thin Blue Line is arriving for me to collect at my parents tomorrow. Am extremely grateful to both of you for getting this for me. I reckon it was right up there for Brit humour and was SO sad when ABC shop said no dvd available.
