Over the Christmas/New Year naturally I've done my fair share of eating out. I've written about the experiences at Customs House and Farm Gate, but have refrained from the others as they were mostly places I've reviewed before. However, part of the credibility of being able to have people use the blog site and website to base any thoughts they might have on eating out around Hobart is to continually keep abreast of what's going on in these restaurants and cafes.
So - I listen to what my friends, family, workmates and commenters on this blog tell me - and will repeat some snippets here that people have told me over the past few days.
Once again, remember that this is one persons account of their own experience on the day.
Anatolias produced a very satisfying meal last night. The Turkish pizza, and Mixed Grill are the ones to go for - according to my sources.
Coal Valley Winery - a very disappointing meal was had there by a party of 10. Most were extremely unhappy with their portion size, the flavours and prices of the food. One of the party is an Italian chef - and he is definitely not a happy chappy.
Gilt for lunch on Thursday was fine.
Divinge also maintained their high standards with lunch last Saturday.
Nellie and Mr Nellie ventured into Dome (the new place in King St) and said they hurried back out as fast as they comfortably could!
Also, interestingly, I noticed a Tas Coffee Roasters outlet trading yesterday in Elizabeth St, North Hobart right next to their Onba, and doing what appeared to be a very comfortable trade.
Takeaway Yobbo (a new-ish commenter on Ritas blogs) reported in on his and vegetarian wife's NY eve meal at The Quarry - $120/head, which covered a 5 course meal with matching wine to go with each course. The booking was for 36 people. When the booking was made, they were apparently only offering seafood and meat. The option of vego was raised at this time, with the hidden threat of going elsewhere implied, so Quarry reluctantly said they'd offer a few alternatives.
On the night, the service reflected this lack of customer service focus, with water having to be requested etc.
The restaurant wasn't full, interestingly enough.
Overall, our Yobbo reports it as being OK but he wouldn't bother returning in a hurry.
So - there you have a cross-section of the dining out public giving their versions of their recent meals out. Please feel free to agree or disagree, or add to the mix.

Picallilly on NYE was good. $100 p/p plus whatever drinks you wanted. 5 courses (4 savoury and 1 sweet) from thier normal menu.
My father (who in his younger days did silver service waitering in the UK apparently) was exceedingly impressed with the service standards and the food.
For some unknown reason he also loved Split Adriatic Cafe at Moonah and our Christmas lunch at Montys.
Hi Zelda - that's a new one on me - Split Adriatic Cafe in Moonah? Whereabouts is that one?
Montys sounded lovely - do they have any special dinners/degustations coming up, do you know? We could pop them on the website, if they do!
I'm hoping to get to Picallily later this week, if all goes according to plan, and am very interested to do so.
Rita - Split is the tiny little cafe just off the corner of the shopping strip that has Strutt clothing, before the new strip of food shops. Its on Main Road, but set back abit - near the sex shop.
Quite a small menu but the portions are HUGE and the owners are lovely.
Open 7 days a week 10 till latish. (Dad and Stephen got kicked out by the owners wife last Thursday night as she wanted to go home, the owner was drinking schnapps with Dad and Stephen and chatting).
Montys is lovely - as are the owners. Why dont you email Natalie and ask if anything is coming up? info@montys.com.au
Enjoy Picallilly, I recommend the scallops and the king fish in the mains and the cola spyder with pop rocks and the coconut trio in the deserts.
I added my name to Monty's contact list so hopefully they'll email me re upcoming events. I love their website and have added that restaurant to my list of 'must go to' for the beginning of 2008! Their NY eve 'do' menu sounded fabulous.
Booked into Piccalilly. Really looking forward to it now. Thanks for the tips.
Must spend a morning out in Moonah this week before I return to work next week. Really interested in Salt, and now Split!
Rita,
Let me know what Salt's like. I keep driving past and wanting to go in, but haven't found the time yet.
