Anatolia

Ate at Anatolia in North Hobart tonight. Now there's an intriguing place if ever I saw one. I've been there quite a few times over the past 8-odd years - and never has it ever been full. Ever. They always seem to have only a few tables occupied - no matter what time of the evening you go there. Everywhere else in North Hobart is chockers then you go into Anatolia and you can always get a table. And still they keep on trading. How does that work? Especially given the post prior to this one.

Anyway - I've always found their food fine - and so it was tonight. Not startlingly fabulous, but quite satisfactory for what we wanted.

There were three of us - old friends from way back - and all we require is decent food to be popped in front of us so we can waffle on, and catch up with what everyone has been doing over the past year.

So we ordered one of their $25 per head platters - which came complete with a good cross section of food, and was enough to fill all of us up.

The service was excellent, and the prices generally were average. I just don't understand why they're not frantic like most of the others along that restaurant strip.

Oh well - I prefer them not too busy anyway - so it suits me down to the ground.

So - an average meal, at average prices. A nice place, without the usual blaring music that seems to be obligatory, and typifies most eating venues these days. A pleasant change to be able to hear what people are saying at the table! Don't anyone dare tell me I'm demonstrating those signs of old age!

My goodness, Anatolia slipped off my radar, Rita.
Last time I was there it was good. And, I think the service must have been so well-oiled it all washed over me and into the ether.
I love Turkish food and haven't had some of their style lamb for yonks (Lamb for Yonks sounds like a US election campaign badge).
Oh boy, Tassie lamb cooked by a Turkish place is a recipe for success, so I wonder why they are just meandering along.
Crikey, I'll have to get back there soon.

Yes - it's worth popping in to Sir G. I re-read my review from last year. I think I was having a bad day, as I was pretty pissed off with the 'average-ness' of it, but I remember the food as being pretty well the same as last night.

Mmmm... wasn't going to comment on this restaurant. I went there on Wednesday after not eating all day due to the excesses of the previous night (whoops I did have a fine bowl of tomato soup at Glen Clyde House in Hamilton - only finished about half of it)
Still at around 8:30pm I decided to head to NTH Hobart and look for some Asian food. Nothing grabbed my fancy, but I saw Anotolia and thought that you can't go wrong with Turkish food.
I realise that Turkish food is best ordered for a crowd, but ordered a kind of mixed grill thing recommended by the waitress. I thought that it was very ordinary. The best was a lamb cutlet (good tassie lamb obviously), but it was dusted with a commercial Turkish dry marinade (I know because I still have some in my freezer from my last visit to the Turkish grocer in Mildura) The rest was pretty lacklustre. I asked for some more yoghurt and when I was nearly finished my meal a small bowl was presented. This added another $3 to the bill..it may have been $5. I can't remember, but it was seriously stiff for a teaspoon of plain yoghurt. The waitress to her credit took it off the bill. Service was fine, but I thought that the food was pretty ordinary. The bill was much the same as many other much more wonderful meals that I ate in Tasmania.
Maybe it was me and my incredibly spoilt palate or maybe it is simply food that is meant to be shared with friends and conversation. The apple tea was fabulous.
Love reading the blog Rita... you really contribute to the Hobart restaurant scene. Congratulations!
Wipe this comment if you like. I have decided not to post any negative blogs on my site, so don't mind if negative comments are wiped. Still labouring over trying to finish the last of the tassie posts and am longing to get onto some of the North Coast passions.

Hey sands - thanks for the comments. Sorry about your meal at Anatolia's - must have ben a real let-down after the other merals youi had whilst here.
Thanks for this nice words about the blog as well, and you shouldn't worry about negative comments and blogs. If you read my previous review of Anatolia you'll see I obviously wrote it after a few nights of very average dining out experiences, and used the blog to express my cathartic outpouring of those feelings of frustration!

Had a lovely feed at Anatolia last night, seems better than a few years back, ordinary wine list but food and service 8/10.
