Kitty's Choices
Amongst the hugely diverse amount of food-related subjects discussed over dinner on Thursday night, Food Kitty was asked by Gobbler as to the reasons why she stopped blogging. I'm sure all of you who remember Kitty's great posts also were extremely curious.
She obviously had quite a few reasons for pulling out, but one of the things mentioned was the huge amount of choice of restaurants we have in Hobart, and the fact that once you find a place you really like, you want to return there again and again - and that can tend to get really boring for your readers if you persistently blog about eating out, then can only cite a few different restaurants as examples!
I know I'm really conscious of that - and now feel guilty if I return to somewhere I've already written about, when there are so many others I haven't tried yet, and know I really should go somewhere different. But - it's human nature to want to experience good things again, so when we DO find somewhere that satisfies all our requirements, why shouldn't we go back to get a repeat of that same feeling of comfort and pleasure?
And, as Kitty quite rightly pointed out, in Hobart we are really spoilt for choice, so if you go to a restaurant which displeases you in some way, you tend to vote with your feet. You have got so many other options for dining out that you just don't bother going back.
That is why restaurants need to get it right. Attention to detail is vital. You might have the best chef and food in the world - but if your waitstaff just plonk the food down in a surly fashion, and neglect vital things like checking on drinks and people's needs generally, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle. It's not enough to just use your OWN judgements on this. As the owner or manager, you might simply just like the waitperson and understand the reasons why they might be misconstrued as being surly by your customers. But the customer doesn't give them that leeway. They don't (and shouldn't) give the proverbial rats.
If I am on the receiving end of crap service, I will leave the restaurant with a bad opinion of the place. End of story. Except that I will also tell people about it. I might even blog about it. Whatever - I have lots of choice in Hobart, so if half the many restaurants give crap service to me, I still can eat out quite happily at lots of other places, and not worry. If I liked the food there, that makes it worse. It means I have to suffer in order to enjoy my dining out experience! I know I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but that's quite plainly ridiculous.
To tie this up with Kitty - she has her favourites and likes to return to them. So now she can with a clear conscience.
I'm sad Kitty's not blogging now, as I felt her posts were excellent, and a worthwhile contribution to society's thoughts. Her method of expression was direct and to-the-point, as well as amusing. She showed quite plainly that she is an intelligent and aware woman with a passion for food, amongst other things. I feel we as a blogging community have lost a clear voice in Kitty.

Thanks Rita, I miss blogging.
I forgot to say we are off to Melbourne this evening with all three young adults. Food is high on the agenda - so any Melbourne recommendations for our party of five to try would be gratefully received.
Still got MoVida and Press Club on the list from last time (didn't get to either) and being there for a Sunday and Monday night might restrict choice a bit, but if anyone has a hot tip, please say so...
Rita,
If Food Kitty doesn't want to maintain her own blog site could you and she come to an arrangement whereby she could publish restaurant reviews on your blog site. Particularly reviews of restaurants that you had not yet got around to reviewing.
Cheers
Curly
Bar Lourinha (Lt Collins) and Verge (Spring St)
Thanks HRV. Love Verge and will try Bar Lourinha.
I will say only this. The exchange of opinions about food in general are valuable. It is important to keep in touch with all opinions.
Gobbler has his passions as does Sir grumpy, you yourself do not stick solely to restaurant reviews. It is food for thought.
One of the most dangerous aspects of being in a position of unquestioned control is when you are both chef and owner. I need the opinions of others to help establish what is the correct path to take. I suppose in the same way as a christian needs a priest or a bible and a cop need s a law book, some of us need the public to help us in our guidance and keep us on track, otherwise we can spiral out of control.
I serve the public, and your opinions are of value. I understand where Foodkitty is coming from, but I say if your still passionate, all of your opinions have validation even if your talking about the same place over, it is a reflection of the current mood. Come back Kitty, saucer of milk on offer..
If you like great Chinese - try the Supper Club up a little alley in Chinatown. Veggies and fish are superb.
Kzee
Thanks Curly. I will echo that to Kitty and would LOVE it if she felt she ever wanted to send me her thoughts on ANY restaurant, I'd add them straight away to the blog. Or to add that line I love so much from "The Castle" - that's going straight to the pool room, or the blog...whichever is applicable!
HRV and Kzee - thanks, on Kitty's behalf.
Cartouche - very salient words, and those reasons alone are probably the reasons why I myself persist with the blogging. There are times when I (and I know Gobbler too, as well as others who blog) just think how silly and pointless blogging actually is. These are the times I feel like pulling the pin, and pressing the Delete button on the site.
Then I think of the many really important (to me) topics we've all discussed, as a group; the heckling; the abuse; the compliments. In fact, all the good old human interaction. Then I leave it for a day, thinking to myself that if I still feel the same way the next day, I WILL stop.
And to date I always feel 'back to normal' the next day.
But - the major thing, Cartouche, is the over-riding feeling of the way the blog takes over your life. All of us felt (and feel) it. Having never been a drug-addict I honestly can't say I know what any kind of chemical addiction feels like - be it tablets, injections, alcohol, dope etc - whatever.
The nearest I could ever come to equating the feeling of HAVING to keep checking on your blog, or comments, or looking at the world, and reacting to any circumstance in your life through how you could link it to your blog, is the closest to how I imagine a drug addiction to be.
It is a really addictive thing, and when you find yourself coming straight into a room and heading straight for a computer to log into your blogsite - that's when you start to realise how hooked you really are.
Gobbler has a young family. Family is life. That's where your priorities are, and should, be. Blogging is one of those hobbies where it should be done in perspective. That's the ideal. The reality is that it DOES seem to take over.
So - enough lecturing. I understand why Kitty decided to actually HAVE a life rather than feeling like writing about it a lot - but I still really miss her words, and commentary on Hobart life.
Hi Rita,
Kinda on subject but kinda not - did you see that massive write up in todays paper about a resturant review site doing tassie resturants which appears to be invite only???
Hi Tassiegal - yes, I did see that write-up. I found that Tassie site a few months ago, but as it was invite only, didn't really see anything to draw me in any more than the blogs which I usually read anyway. I had a look again at it today, and still didn't see too much for me there, so even tho I've got it bookmarked, will continue on my merry blogging way!
I'm trying to work out the use of a review site that is invite only personally..
hey I checked out that eating in tassie review site and Rita i think your blog is WAY better. It's more informative and interesting to read for a start and it has comments that are readable and it gets touchy sometimes etc and thats great!! This eating in tas website was boring and uninviting to say the least
I'm with you niceglassofred. I'll take the risk & stick with the blogs.
