The King of Burnie (ex Menai)
This pub would have to be the most ghastly looking (just take a look at the plastic chandelier over the dance floor, pictured above) and most tastelessly furnished pub I have been in for ages. But you know what? I had the best Peppered Steak there since the controversial one I had at Le Provencal mid last year. The service was fantastic, the staff mega-friendly, the pub nigh on deserted, the chef not happy about having to stay back (past 8.00 pm, when we arrived for dinner), but the food - really surprisingly good! I had it with chips and salad because that seemed like the better option given all the above circumstances, but that too proved to be a good decision, because both the chips and salad were also surprisingly good.
When the chips are down, and you have been turned away from 3 other dining options for various reasons, a steak and chips is recommended from the King of Burnie! We now have intimate knowledge of our waitress's life and boyfriend (dump him!), but that's exactly what makes it the great venue it is.
I'm SO glad I'm more a 'glass half full' person than a 'glass half empty' person - it makes for taking those risks in life that others wouldn't bother with.
The King of Burnie rules!

Where's Burnie?
good question ! even the locals have trouble with that one.

Mr Bok and I used to work at North West Regional Hospital when it was down the hill from the Menai. True, that was menai, menai years ago.
Sadly, all we knew about the Menai was that it closed at 3 am, and it was a mere roll down the hill for anyone who fancied a quick trip to casualty (yes, back then we didn't do the fancy A&E thing) So at the witching hour, we would have the roll-in drunks, the PFO's (pissed, fell over) and the foot fungus that just wasn't getting better.
AND THEY THINK HOSPITALITY IS A CRAP BIZ!!!!
My sore butt can tell you exactly where Burnie is, you two Anons! It's bloody 5 hours drive away from Hobart, that's where!
Kitty - I didn't realise you and Mr Bok had been locals up there, as you so correctly stated, menai years ago. I can understand why you love food and cooking so much now! Still, 'hospitals' or 'hospitality' - is there much difference, in Burnie?
tassie is too small for perochial bitching..stick together and stop being so damn competitive
