Guilford Young College (GYC)

Rita has embarked on an exciting project with 16 hospitality students and their teacher Aaron at GYC. I will talk more about this down the track but from our first session today, I am confident in predicting that these enthusiastic GYC students will kick the proverbial with their upcoming cafe and cafe food!

Watch this space!

Visited Onba today, just for a look really. A lazy Sunday afternoon, and thought why not.
Now I'll tell you why not for me, based on just a few things.
Decided we'd sit out the back, as much to my disgrace I'm a smoker and it was quite a mild afternoon. Also wanted to make the most of perhaps one of our last pleasant days for a while.
Hubby and I thought we'd maybe have a glass of wine and peruse the menu, then decide to stay on or not.
After going inside and explaining this to the very pleasant waiter, we were given some menus and told he would be out in a while.
After a good while he came to visit at which stage I asked him if they sold wine by the glass. Discovering that he hadn't actually given us that menu for that, he returned with it , only to rush off again with the promise of returning soon.
After seeing that the only wines by the glass were at least $12 each we decided maybe not.
I decided on just a coffee as I still wanted to see the food menu but didn't feel like paying that much for a glass of wine.
Hubby didn't want anything but this guy must have read Rita's review regarding the lack of upselling , because he just wasn't going to give in.
When my latte finally arrived, in a dirty glass cup, I wiped it clean myself and enjoyed it. It was a decent coffee.
But the outside area, I must say, was disgustingly dirty. The large stainless steel benches than run along the outdoor area were covered in a thick layer of not just dust but dirt. Indicating that it hadn't been wiped down for a good day or two. And even though some will think "who cares" the ashtrays had layers of ash in them and hadn't been wiped out for ages. Not even okay for us smokers, but what about customers that would just like to sit outdoors? The concrete floor was also very dirty.
An extensive cocktail and wine list, but be prepared to take a full wallet. The menu looked good and maybe I'll think about going back one day, but for those prices I expect a little bit of detail to cleanliness etc.
We ended up at Fish 349 where we had a lovely couple of great glasses of red and shared a fish 349, basically a lovely crisp fishermans basket. Hubby was in his element watching the cars return from the Rock'n'Bowl.
Mmmm not convinced by Onba at all.

I'll paste this comment to the Onba review on the website if that's OK Christina?
But it certainly tallies up with my experience there. Very disappointing but glad you managed to make it up at Fish.

That's fine Rita.
I didn't put anything on the website yet. Can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all type of thinking. I thought this might be too long.
But I can tell you it's very accurate.
I think Onba has been open long enough now to have worked out the kinks, but not so it seems.
