Lunched today at the above venue - and was astonished to find it a world apart from the Bellerive venue.
The service made the world of difference. Obviously the food is identical. The 'buzz' in the New Town shop, and the 'can do' attitude of the staff was outstanding.
I have added Katherine to my list of wonder people in the world of great customer service, but I must say that both young ladies working there today were extremely helpful, friendly and efficient.
Katherine demonstrated the rarely observed talent of lateral thinking - hence her elevation to the Roll of Honour!
I love it when I experience something like that - and I need to acknowledge it publicly.
Apart from that, the food was fine - I had the Salmon Pate, with french bread and salad. It was just as I wanted and expected.
I complimented Katherine on her outstanding service and explained that although the Bellerive JP's was much more convenient for me, I didn't often go there because of the staff attitude and (lack of) service.
I am overjoyed New Town store is way better because I quite like the JP product, and hate the thought that I can't patronise the Bellerive shop just because the staff are so unfriendly - but that's life I suppose!
Thanks Katherine.

on the topic of staffing, read these links and breath a short sigh of relief......it's amplified on the big island!

where do we go from here?
Yes Anon - it's what I've been raving on about for ages!
Skills shortages, labour shortages, Gen Y, baby boomers retiring - these are amongst issues leading up to where we are now finding ourselves.
We in Tassie are historically behind the mainland, and so we are with this. They have been looking it in the face for a while now. We are only just starting to realise that maybe something is not quite right!
We are still not realising that this situation is very definitely here to stay; it is not a transitory thing; we need to do more than 'tut tut' and think it's going to go away in 6 months time, especially if we bury our collective heads in the sand!
There ARE things we can do.
Anyone seriously wanting to know what - email me!
Rita, I have been meaning to email you for a few weeks about an experience that I had at JP Bellerive recently.
It was such a bad experience, that it was hilarious, in a twisted sort of way.
The Surly Staff Member (SSM) had no clue whatsoever about the cakes for sale, and made no attempt to find out for me. Being that I was purchasing for afternoon tea for a group which included my colleague with a nut allergy, I asked for the ones not containing nuts. After much sighing, SSM told me that 2 particular cakes were fine. I checked again with her, and asked her to clarify with someone else. "Yes they are fiiiiine" huffs SSM.
Imagine how thrilled I was then, when colleague inspects one cake which was reportedly 'carrot cake, no nuts' - cuts open the icing, and lo and behold WALNUTS everywhere. Cuts open other piece of cake, crushed nuts inside that one too.
Rang the store back, explained situation, asked to speak to manager, and lo and behold, was 'somehow' disconnected.
Al
Al - that bears out my experiences there as well. It's really annoying, isn't it? I just don't bother going there now, even though it's the closest place, for food, to my office. But - as my post described, New Town is the antithesis of Bellerive store! Go figure!
