Mures Upper Deck was the dinner venue for tonight. It has been about 4 years since I was last there, and the place has come ahead in leaps and bounds. Their renovations are fantastic, leaving the restaurant a beautiful place to take some interstate visitors whose requirements were a desire to eat in a good waterfront seafood restaurant where they could sample a cross section of the famous Tasmanian seafood.
The service was absolutely faultless. All waitstaff extremely well trained, efficient, informative and friendly - something which impressed me very much. The restaurant, like the Ball and Chain last night, was really humming, and flat out.
I decided on the one course of their Seafood Platter, details below:
Seafood Platter (serves one) $49.50
Mures Tas oak smoked salmon.
Pacific oysters, natural and Mures style.
Crystal Bay banana prawns with cocktail sauce.
Spring Bay scallops grilled with garlic butter.
Char grilled Blue Eye marinated in soy, honey, garlic and ginger.
Crumbed fish, scallops, prawns and squid, with tartare sauce
Whilst it read on the menu like it would be great, when it arrived, it was basically a large oval platter of 4 unpeeled cooked prawns, some deep fried crumbed seafood, 6 scallops, 3 rolled up smoked salmon slices, 6 oysters, and the bit of blue eye. Pretty ordinary, and stuff I regularly make myself for dinner at home. I wanted way more than what I consider the norm.
I was really disappointed, as everything seemed to be lining up for a fantastic night. So sad the calibre of the food let everything else down. I expected a higher standard of food, especially given the surroundings, and welcome from all staff which we had on arrival.
I wanted the food to be fabulous. I'm sorry it wasn't.

Glad to see you are still not doing reviews.
Another example of the Slamanca Mafioso at its finest.
I'm sorry to hear that. I enjoyed the food last time I was there...but as has already been established, I'm somewhat less discerning than you :)
I like Mures Lower, never been to upper. SO refuses - keeps mutttering tourist trap and taking me to Montys and other places instead.
"Another example of the Slamanca Mafioso at its finest."
What does that even mean?
Yeah - I'm with you forde! I didn't have the faintest clue what that Anon was talking about!
Lonie - I'm positive you're an exemplary chef; your kids told me you were anyway!
TG - what a shame your other half persists in taking you to Monty's! He is such a mongrel!
I have to agree with you. First went there 18 mths ago when in Hobart with my parents, and had a great meal, but went back last weekend and was disappointed. We went on Sat night and had a great table with a super view, excellent service but my wife's main was poached salmon in a dingy tasteless broth with some pasta in it. Anyway we couldn't find anywhere to eat on Sunday night so thought we'd give them a second chance...a mistake! I had the grilled blue eye with stir fried veggies, which was good but my wife had grilled fish and chips, which was overcokked and bland. We wouldn't bother going back when we're next over, which is a shame as the ambience is great and the wine list is pretty good too.
Hi Mark from Melbourne - I'm really sorry your dining out experience in Hobart was like that. It's disappointing, I know.
Fortunately there are many other venues round there to go to, so try another one next time you're over. If it helps, email me on the Email Rita direct facility on the home page of the blog, and I'm more than happy to map out a few places for you to try, given whatever your time/money/transport issues/constraints are. I have done the same for quite a few mainlanders coming across over the past few months, and am pleased to do so.
I came across this by accident and was very startled to find that I was not the only one who thought Mures Upper Deck was a rip off. I had been to Mures in their original restaurant on Battery Point many years ago and the food and ambience was brilliant. We had gone to Hobart for a family visit in June last year. On the basis of former experience we and our friends also from interstate went to Mures. Not to put too fine a point on it the food was overpriced rubbish - scallops cooked to the size of lump sugar, soggy chips, etc. Basically tourist trap gunge. On the other hand next day we were close by and went into the Lower Deck where you can see what you are going to get and we were very happy with it. Perhaps if they took the downstairs cooks upstairs and replaced the poseurs they would get a better result.
