Random bits of news

Noticed a new-ish Indian restaurant today. It's called Zaika Indian Cuisine, and it's on the site of the old Dolphin Fish Shop in the main block of Sandy Bay on Sandy Bay Road. Has anyone been there?

Also tripped over Luke and Katrina (ex Pecora) with their friend Jay at Tas Hotel and Club this afternoon. Luke is helping Jay out with his renovations at the former Jean-Pascal's in Goulburn St. The food they're looking at having on the menu there, and currently experimenting with, sounds really beautiful, but of course we expect no less with Luke's track record! Luke is also doing a bit of work for another friend at the cafe outside Peacock Theatre, I forget the name I'm sorry. Katrina is doing some work at Smolt.

It was lovely to see these two and catch up with their news. They both seemed quite relaxed, which is great.

Me and the missus tried Zaika on Saturday, Rita.
It was in the phantom zone betwixt lunch and dinner.
The guys were friendly and smiling. We were in a hungry-rush so just went baine marie.
I had beef vindaloo, her ladyship lamb rogan.
There was a nice naan sitting there and the missus, being starving asked for that.
To his credit, the serving chappie said it had been in there a little while and would we like a fresh one.
A good sign that. we said yes.
So we had our main and the fresh cooked naan was brought out when we were about halfway through.
A bottle of chilled water was taken to our table as soon as we ordered, didn't even have to ask.
My vindaloo was hot but not so hot I couldn't finish...beef tender, sauce nice.
Rogan was tender lamb and medium sauce.
We bought a samosa to have later and it was nice too.
I think we were about $21 dollars for our sit down meal (we both had a large serving).
Very friendly, very nice...we took takeaway menus and I think we'll be back to order a la carte.
So there you are then...

I should have known the great curry king would have beaten Rita to the punch and dined there first!!!
It sounds like a good enough place to check out Sir G, so many thanks for your review.
Was the meat gristly? I hate it when curry places use crap, gristly meat in a curry and you get to spit out every second mouthful!

No Rita, no gristle. Me missus has a huge issue with the gristle factor too ....and she had no complaints on this showing.
In fact she said the lamb was nice and tender, without falling into shreds.

Rita - the cafe near Peacock is called Tricycle. Not one of my favs, but have been there. Based on Sir G's review I may venture into Zaika's soon. I drive past it often enough!

Thanks Sir G and TG. Yes, could you please go into Zaika's and check it out for us TG? I've got a few others to keep me busy over the next few weeks.

Ahh...Tricycle.

Lunched there the other day. Lovely penne with kale and parmesan, and good coffee. My friend had some rather lovely looking soup (which I might go for next time). Excellent coffe to finish, good cafe service, and reasonable prices. Being tucked away, it was a bit quieter than most of the Salamanca spots, so it was a good place to catch up on several years' of gossip and renew a friendship.

I work about one minute away from Tricycle, and can vouch for a decent coffee there. Always friendly and their soup is generally pretty good.

Collegues who are less tight then me have taken to lunching there every day, so that's a good sign.
