Spurred on by the review by Graeme Phillips a good friend suggested we try Split for dinner recently. As we entered we found the decor and ambience warm and welcoming, as was also the service throughout the evening. It was a particularly busy night with a couple of larger table groups in the area where we were seated. This meant that, since the restaurant is quite narrow, the noise level did get up a bit as the evening progressed, but the air of enjoyment was infectious too.

We decided to try two house specialties, my friend opting for the goulash and myself the swordfish. The goulash lived up to expectations and was a substantial meal. The swordfish however was quite disappointing. I expected a denser fish , but it was dry and tough, rather than dense. Moreover the rather unpleasant strong fishy taste was not completely countered by the delicious cream and brandy sauce. Of course it had been frozen, but, even then, freshness somewhere along the chain was questionable. If one wanted to improve the overall balance of the meal, a vegetable/salad option was available also. We did not take that option.

I understand the chef’s desire to offer fish that is both different to the locally caught fish and more authentic to the style of the cuisine at Split. However I feel a fresher fish sourced locally, but cooked in the traditional style may have been a more successful option.

Lastly, and purely my opinion, I ask ’what’s in a name’? I have since found Split in my atlas, but even this association has not helped me like it for the name of a cafe. The Pigeon Hole has much the same effect on me too. I am working on downy and cosy warm for this one though, rather than a very tight squeeze, or crumbly food, or putting people in pigeon holes.

Dined at Split last night. For starter we shared the calamari which was crumbed and fried - very ordinary. For main I had the Snapper which was lovely, over seasoned with lashings of butter sauce but tasted fresh and cooked to perfection - YUM! Hubby had steak with a mustard cream sauce which was nice for what it was. Overall a pleasant small restaurant with good service. Would go back for the Snapper and to try the goulash.
