Soup of the Day

I’ve been conducting my own personal quest looking for the place with the best soup, and I think I found my winner today. The venue was Venus. The soup was their Mushroom Soup – the most delicious, mushroomy soup I have ever had in my life! Yep - big call! I make it myself quite often and actually love my own, so wouldn’t have thought anyone else could please me quite as much. But – Venus did that today.

If someone takes me to task for the above description of it being ‘mushroomy’, don’t bother! I have had Mushroom Soup in restaurants a few times where I’ll swear a couple of mushrooms might have been waved over the top of the bowl after they’d dished it up, but that’s as close as the dish got to the actual genuine article!

Venus’ Mushroom Soup was topped with a drizzle of truffle oil which turned it into perfection plus. At $12 for a decent sized bowl, with bread, I’d say I’m onto a winner there. I’ll be back for more soup, guys, so keep it coming!

Everyone knows Dom does the best soups at the Asian Teahouse, Blackmans Bay, Rita.
The basic stock carries the day!
His mushroomy ones are the best I've ever tasted, just sensaish.

Now that's ONE place I haven't had soup. Thanks Sir G - I'll get myself off to Doms for some of his soup asap.

PS Rita, I went looking for a posh soup on Marque IVs menu.
God, what prices.
I got bogged down on the lunch menu, where I couldn't belive a bit of beef was about $38...the you had to add $11 for some mash!
I'm normally a defender of places having to cover costs. But I hate this move toward getting a ``main course'' which is just one item, then having to add veggies, or salad at an extra cost.
You see it in the wanky magazines all the time.
No, no posh dining for me.
Upper-mid range will be my ceiling.
And the soup was expensive too. Keeps riff-raff like me away I suppose.

Rita, you won't believe this but ...

The best soup I ever had was in the middle east many years ago ... after several long days of travel my partner and I settled in at a small caf just outside our lodgings ... we ordered what we would call a soup but it was passed off as a thin lamb stew with stacks of local veg, old mutton I recon as the flavour was unreal ... so unreal that talking to the hotel clerk the next morning he informed us that the cook (76 years of age) was well know for adding hashish oil to his dishes. That would explain the most fantastic night we both had ... Many years ago now but we still dine out on that one !

Sire Grump pull you hands out of the pockets, splash out and let your last grey hair down ..... you only die once and credit card dept won't follow you.

Oh and the cost of the lamb soup was about 2c Au.

Are you sure credit card debt won't follow me? Does it get cancelled. Why wasn't I told?
You spend 2c on soup and call me a meanie for bashing mash at $11 as an extra on a main course?
Nah, seriously, I don't mind spending Cool, but fine dining ain't my scene.
I'd spend up big on things I reckon are better fun and value.
My idea of a nightmare would be a posh Paris restaurant.
Or Petrus. Or anywhere else pretentious.
Hashis Oil, eh....does that come in organic, free range, wholemeal extra virgin?

Hey CR - care to elaborate on "the most fantastic night we both had"?
Seriously, what difference did the presumed hashish oil add to the watery vegie lamb soup/stew?
Sir G - haven't you been to PB? Surely that would have been classified as fine dining?

No, haven't been to PB. Hate the building. Sorry.

Never speak disrespectfully of Society, Grumpy. Only people who can't get into it do that.

Yes, Cool....sounds great.
I remember getting a three course chinese lunch (Soup with roll, chop suey etc and pudding, then tea) for about five bob. Also a long time ago.
By the way Rita, I have pals who use PB often and think its great.
I still haven't forgiven them for knocking down the original pub, where I dined fine and front bar often.
I miss that place.

Speaking of mushroom soups and PB they actually have a mushie soup on their new dining room menu.

Grumpy don't worry about the building - look at THAT view!
