Two of us went for lunch yesterday, and, wanting to sample some interesting-sounding food, decided to order 4 mains (there didn't seem to be entrees on their lunch menu).
We had a Prawn and Avocado Salad, Coconut Prawns (one on each of 5 satay sticks, with dipping sauce), Barramundi Rice Paper Rolls (3 in the serve) and Salt & Pepper Squid with salad.
The Prawn and Avocado salad was boring. The Coconut Prawn sticks were a good idea, the Rice Paper Rolls average, and the Salt & Pepper Squid easily won the day for us.
We thought that little or no imagination was applied to the menu content, and that it had been designed to appeal to the majority of holiday-makers who frequent Port Douglas. This I understand, and totally empathise with. However we are on the hunt for beautiful food, and quite simply didn't find it at Finz.
But - a huge bonus for dinner was that the Prawn boats had just come in to the wharf last night, so we bought 2 kgs of Tiger prawns fresh off the boat for $36 (yes, it was 2 kgs for $36!), boiled them and managed to polish off the lot plus another kg previously bought and barbequed!
Yes, life definitely is hard-going in the Tropics!

Two prawns were swimming around in the sea off Port Douglas - one called Justin & the other called Christian. They were constantly being harassed & threatened by sharks that inhabited the area. Finally one day Justin said to Christian, “I'm fed up with being a prawn; I wish I was a shark, then I wouldn't have any worries about being eaten.”
A large, mysterious cod suddenly appeared & said, “Your wish is granted“, & lo & behold, Justin turned into a shark. Horrified, Christian immediately swam away, afraid of being eaten by his old mate. Time passed & Justin found life as a shark boring & lonely & eventually he’d had enough. He searched for & found the cod & begged to be changed back to a prawn. Lo & behold, he was.
Eager to put things right with his friend he swam to Christian's abode & banged on the coral door shouting, “It's me, Justin, your old friend, come out & play”. Christian replied, “No way man, you're now a shark & you’ll eat me”.
"No, I'm not. That was the old me. I've changed," he said.
“I've found Cod. I'm a prawn again Christian!”

Hah, sunshine and prawns....that's nuthin.
Me and the missus had a big feed from Flippers at the docks...and it was....not good!
I don't know if it is fresh or frozen but the flake and trevalla were very ordinary and the batter was dripping grease all over us.
In the cold it congealed pretty quickly and even attempts at soaking it up with the white, soggy chips didn't help.
Those chips needed some FNQ sunshine to tan a little.
Still, what's $17 down the drain and some arteries clogged up?
The seagulls got a big feed.

Yes Ut Si, it wasn't fine dining.
I often make the mistake on a day off of running around enjoying myself in Asian spice shops and buying wine and good bread etc.
So, come 2pm me and the missus are absolutely starving and just head for the nearest place...it was a mistake but, hey, we had a nice free-range chook cooked in our Le Crueset pot with lots of vegies and a nice bottle of red later.
I'm terrified to eat squid - I don't know why, I just now in Penguin someone offered me squid once, and I got freaked out...
I blame my Dad, I could never be a food critic with the genes of a man who calls Sunday "Boiled Egg Day!"

Well, it was dead already, I might as well do it the honour of eating it.
