National retail award for Tasmanian food business
By Sally Dakis and Cameron Wilson
Monday, 18/12/2006
Tasmanian salad lettuce company Houston’s Farm has taken out a national supermarket award. On Friday night Houston’s Farm at Cambridge received Woolworth’s Supplier of the Year award for fresh produce, a significant award for company, big by Tasmanian standards, but small compared to the multi-million dollar national fresh food suppliers.
Anthony Houston said the award is a great honour, "we were absolutely overwhelmed," he said. "We’re not aiming to beat the big guys we can’t, I think in Tasmania we’ve got to aim for something special and for us that was quality and we continue to try to improve that."
Houstons Farm wins inaugural Woolworths Fresh Food Bursary
Tasmania’s Houston’s Farm has been awarded $100,000 by Woolworths - the very first recipient of the supermarket’s million dollar bursary programme to encourage innovation and sustainability in the fresh food industry.
The team at Houston’s Farm was inspired to apply for the bursary after closely following the global debate about carbon emissions and food miles (the carbon consumed as a result of transporting food from source to shelf). They intend to use the bursary to help develop a blueprint for analysing the carbon footprint of fresh produce grown in Australia.
The $1 million bursary programme will run for ten years with one $100,000 grant awarded annually. Applications are open to any Australian fresh food producer, large or small, irrespective of whether they are a current supplier to Woolworths or not, in the following categories:
Fresh Food Product Development
Fresh Food Farming Process Improvement
Fresh Food Packaging Innovation
