Novaro's in Launceston

As promised earlier this week, I am going to talk about Novaro’s in Brisbane Street, Launceston, where I had a beautiful meal last Monday night. The reason I couldn’t write about it at the time was simple. I made the assumption that they would have a website, and that I would be able to refer back to that for menu items and prices, so didn’t bother to take my usual notes about these matters on the night! They didn’t, and I didn’t! So I was left with the only information from the night being that I ate Scallops and a yummy dessert – both of which I had absolutely no more information than that! Hardly enough to write a glowing report about!

That left me with having to phone them, speak to a human (as opposed to an answering machine), and ask about what exactly I’d had and how much it was. Basically that took me all week!

The good news:
they DO now have a website – as of Friday just gone! How coincidental is that?
I actually got to have a great conversation with Sarah, the co-owner
I found out what I had eaten

So – I had for a main, Scallops in white truffle oil with Golden Seymour potatoes and leek butter (entree $19.50; main $33.50) and desserted on Nougat semi freddo with cranberries and blueberries ($13).

The scallops were divine: delicately flavoured, with the perfect texture. My two dinner companions sampled mine and despite loving their own meals, wished they’d ordered mine! The semi freddo tasted like a special Christmas frozen ice cream and fruit and nut-filled dessert I used to make for the family in the 70’s. It was magnificently presented and tasted the same.

The service at Novaro’s was faultless. The competent waitperson looking after our table pre-empted most of our needs and desires in the nicest and least intrusive possible way. I was bowled over by the standard of the food and service, plus the fact that for a cold winter’s Monday night in Launceston, this restaurant was fully booked! Amazing!

To sum up – I loved it. I loved the ‘feel’ of the place (slightly more upmarket than the name might suggest). If you want to be assured of a predictably excellent value for money meal, definitely go there. I could tell that my experience there wasn’t just a one-off. Sarah has extremely high standards in her expectations of what she wants her customers to experience, and is determined that is how it will be. I applaud that.

Thanks for that Rita. We've been planning a trip to Launceston for a weekend away and wondering where we should eat. We'll include Novaros in our plans.

and the fabulous art by Junko Go on every wall is reason enough to eat there!

God, ut si, and here's me been comtemplating a comment on that ``art'' work.
I was going to say something silly about putting the kiddies' school drawings up.
Shows what I know about art then.
You don't really like that, tell me you don't.....

PS, Rita, did you see Saffron Cafe got a write-up in Friday's Mercury?

Yes, Sir G, I did note the Saffron write-up in the Merc. I chuckled to myself. As Norman Gunston used to say in his Current Affairs pisstake segment, "This is Norman Gunston - a bit behind the news!"

Dear Sir G,
I really do love Junko's work & have 2 of her paintings...got into her through John Olsen (whose work the likes of me will never own unfortunately).
I think it's her energy & whimsy & enthusiasm for the natural environment that appeals but hey, de gustibus non est disputandum!

Yes, Ut si...but your note made me look up the artist...and guess what?
I likes a few of em.
Keen as mustard, nice as pie would sit on my kitchen wall quite nicely.
Maybe our tastes aren't that far apart, after all.
Thankyou.

You're welcome Sir G,
What a way to end a mad day...Mahler's fifth, a glass of pinot & a convert!
Luvly.

Off Topic but the 'snitch' has been taken down.

One less piece of cyber trash to sift through.

Yes, spotted that, Cool. Wonder what happened? Did she jump, or was she pushed?

Me again. Anyone still reading this thread? I did eat at Novaro's last Saturday night and it was as good as people say. I had read a post somewhere else that complained of bad service but for me it was great (and I also read one ages ago written by another solo woman diner who had enjoyed her experience too). Food all excellent - walnut, beetroot and fetta tart for entree, fish of the day (ocean trout) with vegetables (not sure about the lentils but never mind...) and a panna cotta with poached pear to finish. Campari aperitif, a local riesling and coffee. What a lovely way to finish up a Saturday spent on the snow of Ben Lomond!
