Yes, once again Rita is moving round the country. This time she has ventured north, in fact literally to Far North Queensland, to check out the food scene in Port Douglas, and coincidentally for a bit of restoratve rest and recreation.
Accompanied by two daughters (youngest and eldest), son-in-law and two grandchildren, we are fearlessly going where no man has gone before! We are sharing a beautiful, luxurious, 4 level, tropical paradise house which comes with pool, 2 BBQ's, 3 separate relaxation areas, 3 bathrooms, rainforest garden, as well as Marque IV equivalent next door. This small exercise in family dynamics may well end in tears, or we may well be forging stronger bonds than ever before. Who can say? All Rita knows is that the concept of snow, rain, ice, frost, fog and all the other examples of chilly Tassie winter are so un-picturable now we are here in this tropical paradise of 26 degrees as to have all of us trawling the main drag with fists clutching our freshly minted resumes, pleading for jobs, in order to be able to remain here!
Having just arrived yesterday, we are currently 'feeling our feet' food-wise, but today heralds the start of a week of the Rita Family Food Adventures from FNQ.

HI Rita, having just spent 8 days in Port Douglas and having eaten my way down the main street and around the corner to the marina, I can recommend nearly everywhere!
We were particularly happy with Waterline (however also ate at the Living End, Thai, Courthouse, Finz etc) and watching the boats coming in at 4pm from the Combined Clubs with a nice cold beer!
Enjoy... you deserve a good break!
Cheers, LT
Have a wonderful holiday - FNQ mid-winter is a great place to be. Am sure you aren't missing the forecast of snow, yet again, in Tassie (or week after week of grey, cold damp Melbourne weather either). Suitably envious :)
We had a guy from up there, born and bred, who couldn't stand the summers up there, Rita.
He moved to Tassie for some fresh air. It's all a question of extremes.
For me, bad weather can be sticky, stinking hot OR cold, wet and grey.
In most places up there you can't even use the beaches because of salties or jelly fish.
I'm sticking up for Tassie. A swimming pool is just a swimming pool, anywhere!
LT - did you happen to get to Harrison's? I've read 2 OTT reviews recently about this place. It sounds great. Will try to follow in your footsteps though!
Thanks AOF. Having missed out last year on having holidays due to being on the jury for 2 months, I'm really hanging out for them this year. Leaving behind the freezing Tassie weather was great.
Sir G - You're right about a pool being a pool anywhere, but I'd use a pool in FNQ way more than one in Tassie! In fact last time I swum in Tas was maybe 10+ years ago.
You poor bugger, Rita.
I am about to load some more East Coast peppermint onto my woodheater and pour a glass of red.
You must be missing the frosty gales whipping round the eaves already!
That nippy weather gives you a grand appetite too.
Enjoy.

My first posting was to FNQ when Port Douglas was at the end of a dirt track. Even then it had the best Thai food outside of Bangkok.
gin glîang!
Sir G - I must confess to not missing those frosty gales one iota! The sun, palm trees and heat are tangible reminders that there is more to life than trying to figure out whether I need to add a jacket to the layers of spencer, skivvy, shirt and jumper to my outfit for the day!
Hi Rita... no didnt go to Harrisons... mainly for personal reasons which you may think a little odd. We have a dog (who most of the time we love very dearly) called harrison. Anyway, the night before we were to fly to PD, he went missing (bolted off on a walk like he has been doing a bit recently) and was missing for over 5 hours. We didnt think we were going to be able to get on that plane to get to FNQ because of the damn dog. Anyway, as a result we didnt want to eat anywhere that reminded us of him!
Harrison's looked lovely. We also really wanted to eat at Salsa but couldnt get in.
We did similar to you though. Bought up a whole lot of seafood (bugs, prawns, barra) at the local fish shop (with a local cockatoo called sqwark who took a liking to my husband who wanted to trade him for harrison) and sat on the balcony of our veranda with a very nice bottle of bubbles, chibata and green salad. Cant really beat it!
Keep enjoying the sunshine!
