Nuts about Webster
WEBSTER walnuts are again available and have been for some weeks, but tracking them down can be difficult. Retail outlets are limited. In Salamanca in Hobart Wursthaus Kitchen and Nuts and More at the Saturday market have them. I also found them at Meredith’s Orchard in Margate, where they are $9.95 a kilo in the shell.
This is the best way to buy them. Some of the nuts I still have from last year compare poorly with the new season’s freshly cracked walnuts but, even though a year old, they are still about 500 per cent better than walnut kernels, which so easily go rancid.
You are much more likely to find Webster Walnuts on the East Coast, where they are grown, and in Launceston outlets. I am told this is because more retailers in those places ask for them. People wanting 10kg or more are buying direct from Webster Walnuts in Forth
