Where's Kawasemi?

Look, I know I'm old! I can just about face up to that label. Along with old age come a few unfortunate disabilities, like forgetfulness, dithery-ness, stupidity, an inability to drive competently etc ad infinitum.

It's OK - my kids keep me well in check pointing out those many inconsistencies daily. But I know it's not just me, because I had No 5 child (24 years old) with me the other night when I suggested we grab dinner at Kawasemi - and we couldn't bloody find it!

It's quite simple, I know. It's in Dickensons Arcade. Which was closed off with roller doors at both entrances to Dickensons Arcade, and bolted shut also.

We walked round the building. We tried ALL possible entrances to that whole block! We went round the back and read the sign announcing to the world that Kawasemi was there in the arcade and open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. We tried the (locked) door next to said sign. No way could we reach Kawasemi.

It was 6.00 pm Wednesday night. Now are we really that stupid or what? How the hell do we find the door? I just know there's some really simple way to get in there. Can someone please let me in on the secret?

In the end, hungry and frustrated, we made our way to Sandy Bay and had Bund in Shanghai food.

Rita - it's closed from 1st to 14th of September for staff holidays. There's a notice on the door but if the arcade was closed.....

By the way, I'd love to join you all today. Could be an interesting meet. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of preparing a roast pork lunch for lunch today. Maybe next time.

Thanks Kzee. I knew you'd know what was going on there!

So Rita, how was the Bund?
If I'm not going to Segretto maybe we could try there.

Bund was OK. It's a bit more expensive than your average Chinese, but I have a few favourites on their menu, and sometimes have a craving for them, so that's when I loose all reason and just have to have what I crave.

Their Shredded Beef is my downfall. I love it, and often phone & order it as I leave work in Bellerive in the evening, and by the time I've reached Sandy Bay, my takeaway is ready to collect, and presto - there's dinner.

I'm going to have to keep all my takeaway menus in the glovebox of the car for that very reason!

We talked about Segretto the other night, so I won't go further with that. If you're feeling Asian, why not try Darjoh's?

Been to Darjoh's. The ladies quite liked it but we try to go somewhere different every time.
Of course we have have our favourites, D'Angelos, Amigos, etc.
We look for places that are reasonably priced and byo if we can, because we tend to squaff as much as we eat some nights. The other ladies car pool and I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful hubby who picks me up.
Any suggestions out there?
It looks like it may just be Segrettos.
Why is it when you find a place with great food there is such a major draw back? And this one is pretty major.
Also we try to stay within a 20km radius of the city, for convenience sake.

What was said earlier re holidays at Kawasemi - ALSO before you panic totally, Nat and Matt from Montys are on a busmans holiday for two weeks from Today. Going to the wine regions in Vic and SA and investigating good food along the way. What was going to be the seafood deguo in october is now going to be an 8 course mixed deguo based on the wines they discover on hols and in conjunction with the Cellars at Kingston - Rumour has it that if there is enough interest they will do two nights. Rumour ALSO has it that there may be the ability to buy wines from Kingston Cellars on the night....
Usual deguo prices will probably apply.

Also if you need your Japanese fix and are in town Yume (in the old kebab place) are cheap, cheerful and REALLY quite good. Their 9 dollar bento box for lunch is exceedingly filling and tasty!

Best bento box ever! Love it... shame it's not licenced because Japanese without Sushi is like a BBQ without beer.

Oops not sushi... sake! Slip of the Japanese finger.

so are they not even BYO licenced?

Hi P.
You can byo at Kawasemi. We've done so many times. And here's the best bit. NO CORKAGE!
Gem of a place this.

'so are they not even BYO licenced?' - Nearly 100% certain that you don't need a licence for BYO.

Think your right forde.
So is it okay when an unlicensed place charges corkage?
Often wondered. This is why Kawasemi doesn't charge as they're not licensed.

You do need a licence to allow patrons to BYO.Pretty hard to enforce I know but I think it is an $1100 fee for the actual licence so many places don't have it.
Am I right? Any experts out there?

As I said, you don't need a licence for BYO. From the Dept of Treasury:

Q: I run a restaurant/café. Do I need a liquor licence to allow people to bring their own liquor onto the premises to have with their meals?

A: No. You don’t need a liquor licence unless you wish to sell liquor to your customers. It is your decision as the café operator if you allow people to BYO their liquor onto your premises.

Corkage is really more of a service charge and is unrelated to the SALE of alcohol, thus it's fine. Places that don't charge corkage as absorbing the costs (glassware, washing) due to the increase in sales they get from being a no-corkage BYO place.

Thanks FM
Great news about the mysterious BYO licence!

See you all at Yume with a six pack of Sake!

With the loss of Kawasemi for NCR sushi, went to a place in Glenorchy, Hana (on a little street between the cinema and Big W) last night. Not quite up to Kawasemi, but still very good (though it was closing time, can't comment till I've been a bit earlier). Would also make it onto the $10 list as they had anumber of noodle soups and noodle dishes around that benchmark.
Speaking of liquor laws, Blue Skys has but in for a 'on licence' this week. Another restaurant going for a back door bar licence! Whilst any new bars have to battle it out up front. It's just not cricket.
