Phew! Go the jugular why don't you, todays Mercury editorial! Talk about named and shamed!
Today's editorial names Donut King in Cat and Fiddle Arcade, as well as owner Judith Simmonds, as being guilty of coercing teenage workers to work for flat hourly rates of pay with no penalty rates or they wouldn't get any work.
These facts came to light after one 16 year old employee made a complaint to the Fair Work Commission. Compensation has been ordered to be paid to employees, and the employer fined as well.
Despite the employer apologising, The Mercury has gone further and made the judgement that this was not an oversight but a "deliberate attempt to bully and scam workers".
Regardless of either parties points of view, I find it interesting that The Merc has made such a public declaration of their stance on this particular subject. This really is opening yourself up to litigation.
It is a subject I myself am passionate about too but I must admit I got a shock seeing the editorial about it in todays' paper.

There would be a lot more jobs on Saturday and Sundays if there weren't any penalty rates!
In this day and age it is a rort!
We had a similar situation at a place I used to work at, employing mostly younger people, AWA's were bought in (all identical) and we were told to sign or they'd simply employ someone else - "there are plenty of kids after a job out there". Hardly any of us signed them, but were paid under the AWA's conditions regardless...

What do you class as milk boiling?
My mate works at Gloria Jeans and was told it is company standard to heat milk up to 140 degrees... Sounds very hot!
I think i know of a workplace paying there employees AWA rates when they shouldent be.
Wouldn't be the first time the Mercury has bordered on litigous journalism. Many restauranters would agree...
know what you mean by 'milk boilers'..eek, nothing worse, sadly even after asking for strong :(
