Dreadful service. OK food.
A night at Le Provencal is like entering one of Gordon Ramsay’s television episodes. It starts when you can only enter after the clock strikes 7.00pm. The interior is a tribute to the art of Trompe d’Oeil - very French - but welcomes are cool and restrained. We felt we were inconveniencing someone by appearing unannounced, even though we had a reservation. The food was very plain and lacked French verve or an emphasis on the fresh and local which is the essence of French regional cuisine. For example, my lamb dish consisted of pieces of shoulder and vegetables which were smothered in a sea of plainish gravy - not very exciting, and, dare I say it, not very French. My partner’s meal was equally boring, as was the wine list.
Gordon would have had a field day. Where the fuck is the spirit, the enthusiasm, the passion, the French culture, the fresh is best? Fucked if we’re going back.
We went to Le Provencal the other night, ended up being just the two of us. The wait at that place always frustrates me, waiting for cuttlery, waiting for drinks, waiting for food, waiting for waitresses - but the food ALWAYS makes me leave happy and rolling down the street as I invariably have the steak and eat all the accompanying chips regardless of how Mr Creosote-esque I am becoming!
