Hiya Rita,
We had lunch at Onba yesterday. Staff were young and perky but VERY inexperienced. We were in no rush, and its just as well. Wine took an age to arrive, and fortunately Mr Bok stopped the seal being twisted in the nick of time (wrong wine) The Lubiana wasn’t available "sold out" (after another delay) and then the replacement choice took an age. We had already eaten our first pass of tapas by then.
$9 for a single lamb cutlet might have been OK had it been cooked perfectly, had the "porcini dust" been evident, or the bean puree more than a tasteless smear.
$100 and 2 hours later we were hungry enough to consider afternoon tea (elsewhere).
I know its hard to find the real measure of a place when it first opens, but I think the staff should have been given some (PAID) training to make them passing familiar with the menu and wine list.
I reckon we’ll go back after letting the crinkles settle down- it certainly looks good - the sophisticated, eclectic relative of the Raincheck- but maybe just for drinkies - the cocktail menu is ginormous.
Visited Onba today, just for a look really. A lazy Sunday afternoon, and thought why not.
Now I’ll tell you why it’s not for me, based on just a few things.
Decided we’d sit out the back, as much to my disgrace I’m a smoker and it was quite a mild afternoon. Also wanted to make the most of perhaps one of our last pleasant days for a while.
Hubby and I thought we’d maybe have a glass of wine and peruse the menu, then decide to stay on or not.
After going inside and explaining this to the very pleasant waiter, we were given some menus and told he would be out in a while.
After a good while he came to visit at which stage I asked him if they sold wine by the glass. Discovering that he hadn’t actually given us the menu for that, he returned with it , only to rush off again with the promise of returning soon.
After seeing that the only wines by the glass were at least $12 each we decided maybe not.
I decided on just a coffee as I still wanted to see the food menu but didn’t feel like paying that much for a glass of wine.
Hubby didn’t want anything but this guy must have read Rita’s review regarding the lack of up-selling , because he just wasn’t going to give in.
When my latte finally arrived, in a dirty glass cup, I wiped it clean myself and enjoyed it. It was a decent coffee.
But the outside area, I must say, was disgustingly dirty. The large stainless steel benches that run along the outdoor area were covered in a thick layer of not just dust but dirt. Indicating that it hadn’t been wiped down for a good day or two. And even though some will think "who cares" the ashtrays had layers of ash in them and hadn’t been wiped out for ages. Not even okay for us smokers, but what about customers that would just like to sit outdoors? The concrete floor was also very dirty.
An extensive cocktail and wine list, but be prepared to take a full wallet. The menu looked good and maybe I’ll think about going back one day, but for those prices I expect a little bit of detail to cleanliness etc.
We ended up at Fish 349 where we had a lovely couple of great glasses of red and shared a fish 349, basically a lovely crisp fishermans basket. Hubby was in his element watching the cars return from the Rock’n’Bowl.
Mmmm not convinced by Onba at all.
I had breakfast at Onba on Tuesday and it was great. The bread was so wonderful I would love to be able to make some just like it. Is there any way I could get the recipe?
A few friends and I had a pre dinner drink at ONBA last night. Didn't realize you had too book a couch! This place has got really popular. Had a gorgeous citrus cocktail but one major gripe was the size and price of the cocktails. I know I last went two years ago but in that space of time the cocktail sizes have halved and the prices raised considerably. When I last went, the average cocktail price was $13.50 and they were HUGE! Now the cheapest cocktail price is $17.50 and the cocktails are half the size. Also it was so busy that ordering and paying for drinks later confused the lovely waitstaff who seem to have no idea who has paid and who hasn't. We went up to pay for our drinks upon leaving and they were confused as to what we were paying for as if that had already been done.....careful guys, a less honest patron may take advantage of this. A lovely place for a drink before dinner or to hang out with friends on the couches but be sure to book.....
Finally got here and just wanted to say that Onba makes for a great night out. My partner and I experienced good friendly service, great food that actually filled us up unlike some places I have been to recently! and yes I agree the cocktails are getting up there, but they are very good.Grab a couch upstairs if you can as it has a certain atmosphere. The duck liver pate and rum jelly is amazing!
