Had a very interesting chat with Justin Harris (Moorilla) yesterday. Now there's a man with a great sense of humour!
Amongst the many subjects covered were the AHA/Restaurant & Caterers awards, held at Wrest Point on Tuesday night; and Gobblers and my blogs.
Apart from the report in the Mercury yesterday, which named only 2 or 3 of the overall winners at the big night on Tuesday, I so far have failed to really find out more specifics of winners.
Breakfasting at WP yesterday morning, I was told that the menus from the AHA awards held a vital list (possibly contenders for the various thrones?). I tried really hard to procure a leftover menu so at least I had a clue as to who might have been in the running for same, but....no luck.
So, unless you know someone who actually won (or came second) in any category, and is telling people about it, you remain in the dark - like me!
Justin suggested a bit of web research. A brilliant suggestion which I'm determined to follow up.
Anyway, according to The Merc - Me Wah was the Best Overall Restaurant winner. An interesting choice? I want to know more about how they reach these conclusions. Not that I'm disputing the ultimate winners, don't get me wrong. It just interests me as to the who/the how/the motivations/the whens etc. Is it a cliquey group who huddle together in a dark room over a few nice bottles of red and white, deciding who will receive these accolades? Is it a standard form which everyone who wants to enter into the 'fray' and be considered eligible needs to fill out, and be judged accordingly (by the cliquey group?)? What are the criteria? I need to research this a lot more, obviously.
Anyone who wants to make me a better and more informed human, please feel free to respond.
Justin, who admitted to having read the odd blog or two, also made a comparison between Gobblers and my blogs - citing the differences as being similar to a Margaret & David scenario or Maggie and Simon scenario. That really amused me.
Thanks for taking the time to speak to me, Justin. And you know you're on notice now.......Rita's coming out there soon!

How do you think these awards are perceived Rita? Do you think they have the same cachet as say the
Gourmet Traveller ones?
Went to Smolt again last night- it was really good.
Oh & I liked the Movie show comparison but which one of us is David?
Gobbler, you've got me really worried if you want to be Margaret!
Depending on how the awards are judged, I suppose that's how they would be preceived, but let's face it, we're all human. We all like to be winners. So if there is any form of acknowledgement of us in the way of Best Anything/Top Whatever, we'll love it, no matter how much or how little cachet the award has.
I wouldn't have put it on a par with the Gourmet Traveller. Would you?
Woodbridge pub cruised for years on that award they won for fabulous food (which it was at the time they won it) in 1893! (Yeh, yeh, I'm Aries - we are reknown for exaggerating!). The sign was up outside there for yonks after, and, I thought, was quite deceptive because the food subsequently was awful. You wouldn't go there for a meal in a fit!
Soem habist die hard.
The 'New' Woodbridge Pub is still talking up its award winning bread. Trouble is those awards were for two years ago!
I detest awards in anything Rita, Gobber.
Can't abide Logies, Oscars, OBE's CBe's Knighthoods, Dayhoods, best restaurant, best real estate agency, Top 100 houses...you name it.
I put it down to an upbringing where we were taught not to ``show off'' (the American disease some called it.)
I will never watch any award show or bother with any award list.
Now you can take my argument to pieces but I know it's the best argument in its class not only in Tassie but Australia and should be presented in any international competishin for opinions in the world. I deserve a medal for sharing this fact with you. Or a certificate at least.
I was there on the night and I can remember a couple. Marque iv won the Premiers award for outstanding contribution, Angassi, best modern Australian, 373, best European and the Terrace best fine dining.
P.S. Wrest point - read your menu and make sure what you are serving is what is on your menu. Are rotting grapes and new trend? It certainly wasn't botrytis
