Went to a function at Coal Valley tonight - and I must preface this post with a Rita 'gush' warning!
Clare Falconer well and truly excelled herself with the food tonight. The flavours were exquisite, the food absolutely top notch, the service great; in fact the whole experience was sublime.
The different combinations of foods and flavours culminated in food that couldn't be faulted.
They do breakfasts there as well at the latter part of the week, so if you want a venue that has all you could possibly want - a great chef, wonderful food, fabulous setting, great service - go there!

hi rita
just on a completley different note. i would like to thankyou for the calculator and plant that i recieved today from someone you had coffee with.
Sounds great! Went to Amulet tonight. Menu not very summery. Oysters great, tho menu gazpacho unavailable, lush, fat and fresh. Service variable - great for water and wine ( bit biblical, that) but bit iffy for food. Lacked wow factor. Found tuna bit weird. Totally cold inside so didn't 'go' with accompaniments.

I'm glad as Clare is a talent that has been missed of late.
She has a habit of burning brightly for a while, then fizzing out.
I hope she sticks this post out a wee bit longer.
Welcome back Clare
Hi Anon 12.25 - glad you liked your presents. I like to share things around!
Kzee - interesting about Amulet. It's in the too hard basket for me. I hate their chairs, so am never comfy when I eat there. Hence I avoid going there at all costs. Sounds stupid, but I have plenty of choice for dining here in Hobart, so I exercise it.
Anon 5.33 - thanks for that comment. I too am glad Clare is at Coal Valley, and performing well. Until the disappointing meal we had a few months back at Criterion Cafe, I had never had a bad meal cooked by Clare. Everyone's allowed to have an off time, so I assume that was Clares, and she's now back on track.
I'd recommend eating at Coal Valley to anyone wanting a gorgeously relaxing afternoon of food, wine and views.
Clare Falconer has let so many people down it hurts to see her praised for a brief flash in the pan(pardon the pun). Yes she can cook if she is straight, but so can I. To be praised in these forums you should earn it. Clare has endangerd 3 businesses through her lack of passion, lack of work ethic and inability to present herself at work "ready to work". Their are many many hospitality proffesionals and owners that deserve your kudos more than someone who is incapable of giving the industry and those who choose to work in it the commitment that it deserves. Move on from Clare Falconer, she has burnt more bridges than the German invading army and deserves no sympathy what so ever. Her own family fired her from the Criterion for goodness sakes.

Hi Turkish
You are quite definite in your views, and obviously know quite a lot.
You mention that there are many hospitality professionals and owners who deserve our kudos. Can you please name a few, and I will be happy to follow up and write about these people and their businesses, if I haven't already done so.
This being a blogsite, I encourage anyone and everyone to have their say and participate in discussions, so thank you for adding your opinion. I won't buy into the Clare discussion simply because I don't know about any of those circumstances you referred to in regard to Clare.
Assuming all you say is correct, it'd be nice to give her another chance to redeem herself, wouldn't it? Hopefully not at someone elses expense.
I shudder to think of the amount of stuff-ups I've made over my life but I was given a few breaks to rectify some of them, and it hasn't turned out so badly in the end.
Keep up the reading and contributing here!
Hi Rita
Yes we all make stuff ups, there is no doubt and having children I must agree with you, it is important to give people a chance. Having spent 24 hours considering my blurb (or should I say fairly forthright outburst) I believe the real issue for those who have employed and worked with Clare is that she has made no effort to mend those broken bridges. We all make mistakes and really should not be judged on them, how we carry ourselves after the mistake is another thing though.
Turkish
Hi Turkish - thanks for that response. I'm glad we've reached a mutual understanding about this one, and I welcome your future participation and contribution to the blogs.
I hope you haven't taken too much offense to my posting your comment on the Express Cafe review - and the comments that has elicited - but we really mean no harm.
As I said there - all we are doing is being a bunch of harmless people chatting away anonymously here about a common interest.
None of us know who we are, so it's very easy to be honest in these circumstances. And that's what people like Cartouche meant. He is an owner/chef of his business and likes to keep his finger on the pulse of what people are saying and feeling about the restaurant scene here in Hobart.
I haven't a clue who Cartouche is, and I would hate to go to his restaurant & review it and say shit things about it if I had a shitty time there, but at least he'd know that whatever I said was honest and unbiased.
As a customer, you do not care about chef's work ethic and the fact they have 'endangerd 3 businesses through lack of passion.' As long as your meal was fantastic: the chef, venue, manager, etc all get the fantastic tag. History is for school not restaurants. Though I have had a history of fine meals at Coal Valley.
