The employer-funded trip to Melbourne that I wrote about a few posts ago occurred last weekend. The crew arrived back on Monday afternoon - relaxed but a bit pee'd off that Oz had lost the cricket.
Just to refresh your memory, I told you about a local restaurant owner who was rewarding some of his hard-working team (who had worked split shifts non stop over the Xmas/New Year period till last Friday) by paying for them to travel to Melbourne, go to the cricket, a concert and a few meals out.
Word is that they had a great time and returned exhausted but happy.
Where can we all find such a thoughtful, generous and wise employer like that?

Do you ever have a conversation with anyone - you know, "how are you, how did that trip you were talking about go? Did they have a good time?"
Yes, boring old communication.
It's a BLOG.

obviously people are a bit touchy about rewarding staff and the thought that they may actually have to recognise their value if they are going to keep them... dont forget you have to first attract them...
Ask anyone who runs a business in Perth W.A and they will tell you that they can't treat staff badly as they leave and get a better job on higher pay and then the employer is very luck if they can find a replacement.
Wake up ! The staff make or break a business so treat them well.
I am a little worried about the workers comp ramifications of taking staff on holiday - any thing happens then you may just be liable for the injury and be required to pay lost wages as well. May just ring the broker and ask her advice a?
Cool Room
National Sorry day was yesterday.
I wish someone woulkd for once talk about the job instead of the bloody workers rights for a change!
All I ever hear is staff issues, blah blah blah.
What about the poor owner? Is it so unreasonable to expect a honest days work for the offered wage? Why do we always have to be handing out incentive after incentive just to get people these days to work in hospitality?
I think many of them out ther forget that they actually have to 'work' to get paid you know!
Contrarian
Oh no Cool Room! Please don't take us down the workers comp path. Are there seriously any people left in the world who just operate on the level that they accept that anything that happens to them is THEIR OWN RESPONSIBILITY?
Mind you, Rita, I don't think this level of reward is sustainable for the average place fighting to earn a crust.
It's Tattslotto stuff or pie in the sky.
Just a wee cash bonus would probably suffice, if it is earned.
Little cafes and middling restaurants wouldn't be able to reward at this level, I'm sure...especially as costs all round are jumping.
Sir Grumpy
poor bloody owner expects the staff to work their butts off in bad conditions with shite pay all for the poor bloody owners bottom line... just in case you haven't heard australia has the lowest unemployment levels EVER which means people can choose where, how and when they work... look after them and they will choose you...
Does anybody watch Chopping Block...some of those people have the most outlandish ideas about their quality.
And what's with this macho owner thing? Two weeks, two blokes who need a reality check.
But some of the staff are good and just need some decent motivation. Especially in these days of full employment.
Contrarian - you typify the employer of today who can't get staff and blame the slackarse job seekers for not wanting to work for you. Of course we all know you have to work your day for your pay. That's a given.
As an employer in hospitality, you DON'T have to offer incentive after incentive - but it would help your cause if you DID. Employers who DO offer extras, and go that extra mile for their staff, attract and retain better staff. End of story.
I work in the field. I listen to & see them daily. I can tell you that's exctly how it is.
