Moby Dicks Breakfast Bar, Stanley

What an original concept, and one which I would have thought wouldn't work in Tassie, especially in a more isolated area like Stanley - but it SO does.

Moby Dicks Breakfast Bar is run by Barry and Colleen - an extremely likeable older couple, who are fulfilling their passion - cooking brekky for people each morning from 7.30 - 11.30, then closing and having the rest of the day off to do what they want. They are your typical country folk: caring, very friendly, hospitable, generous and fun. Barry's favourite CD is on a continuous loop with Rod Stewart serenading you with his take on some timeless classics while you hoe into a beautiful brekky at a reasonable price, with Barry crooning along with Rod as he constantly weaves across the cafe checking on the state of your tummy.

I chose the Canadian Breakfast - home made waffles, bacon, 2 poached eggs, and maple syrup served separately in a jug. I chose that one with Christina's words ringing in my ears about the delights of bacon and maple syrup. Well Christina, I'm happy to have tried it, and at least I've given it a go now, but I really do think I prefer my savouries separate from my sweets, in this guise anyway.

One of my brekky companions had the scrambled eggs and bacon which looked gorgeous and was what I originally was going to order before I talked myself into trying the Canadian delight.

I love the idea of running a specialty brekky place. The only person who wouldn't come to my Brekky Bar would be Sir Grumpy who has wasted no words in expressing his abhorrence of early-day dining!

So, Barry and Colleen - I take my hat off to you, as you fulfil my dream of getting back into hospitality, cooking what I love - brekky, and singing along with Rod Stewart as well!

Hi Rita,
Welcome back. I hope you enjoyed your road trip as much as I'm enjoying hearing about it.
So glad you tried the Canadian Breakfast. Not quite up your alley though by the sounds of it.
I don't know what it is I love so much about it. Bacon and maple syrup are a match made in heaven to me. Another of my favourites is fruit toast with butter and vegemite.
Mmm, maybe it's just me.

Hi Christina. Thank heavens I'm nearly finished with my dining out tales from the past few days!
Yes - I'm happy I gave your idea a run, but am happier to revert to savoury and sweet separately.
I was there with you for the fruit toast and butter - till you added the vegemite!

I do dream of bacon and eggs, Rita...but the thought of charging out of home for a morning feed never appeals.
Only on hols at hotels etc when you can wander downstairs...but that's the exception. Sounds like a good place though.

I agree Rita, what a concept and it does work in Stanley which is fantastic for us locals! Bustling Barry & Colleen do take some time out during the colder months but hey thats well deserved given they go flat out seven days a week during the tourism season.

I think I have to agree that the sweet and sour breakfast is not for me its one or the other, only improvement I would like to see at Moby Dicks is some decent sough dough bread!

Hi Rita - my first blogging experience, and its with you!!

The Gorgeous Husband and I had a most enjoyable breakfast at Moby Dick's a couple of months back, recommended by the sensational guys at VDL...I had what to date was THE best BLT ever - the tomatoes were so flavoursome. TGH had the full breakfast and loved the excellent local sausages - it was great to see the local produce being used. We loved the Rod Stewart serenading (it is SO good to start the day with someone who loves what they do, it sends you off feeling great for the rest of the day - you taught me that many years ago, Rita! - and all for the most reasonably priced breakfast we've ever had - Moby Dick's is now a must visit any time we're in Stanley at breakfast time!
