Barilla Bay

A glorious autumn day like today called for a great venue for lunch - so today's destination was Barilla Bay.

There were three of us, so Rita made sure she sampled a bit of everyones!

Following on from last night's huge meal at Monty's, and because the entrees sounded beautiful, I decided on 2 entrees. The boys had a main each.

My entrees were:
Salt and pepper squid with fried zucchini and mint salad and a sour cream dressing $16
Tempura Barilla Bay oysters in a golden egg net with Thai salad and peanut toffee nam jim $18

The mains the boys had were:
Barilla Bay Lasagne - a selection of local seafood in a creamy dill and lemon sauce between layers of hand made lasagne sheets $27.50
Thai yellow curry of Tasmanian seafood with bok choy, steamed jasmine rice and kaffir lime $28.50

They bought out the oysters to me first. I tasted the dish and it was the most gorgeous and divine food I had eaten in at least 12 hours! I'm being silly here. It really, genuinely was the most exquisite of dishes I have had for ages. I was all set there and then to go home dragging chef behind me as galley slave forever!
But - then they bought out the squid, and it was SO floury-tasting. I tasted one piece and had to reject it. The aftertaste of the beautiful oyster dish was too good to mar with trying to persist with eating the squid - so I explained to David, our waiter, that I didn't like the too-flouriness taste of the squid. He handled this magnificently, and offered to replace it etc, but I was more than happy with the previous dish I had eaten, so filled up nibbling on the chips and aioli we had ordered as side dishes ($7.50 each).

The boys very generously let me sample theirs, and both meals were beautiful too.

I had recently heard a few negatives about Barilla Bay, so was pleased to find that generally they more than satisfied our table today.

As with all these things, once again, it's just one person's experience on the day. I will be back there again as soon as I can.

You must have gone on a good day.
In my opinion Barilla has gone down hill dramatically in the past few months.

I have been to barilla since their new chef started in oct 09,,, Gary something "frech i believe" and i must say not only has the menu changed and much bigger in their selections, but it was brilliant! The squid has changed and may have been the best i have tried with a yuzu dressing. You must try again as i love this website but thr review is outdated...

Thanks for jogging my memory Scott. You are totally correct. I have seen their ads on tele lately and thought to myself, each time I see one, that I must return there. I will now add BB to my 'to go to' list.
