Mures Lower Deck

(Pictured above is NOT Mures Lower Deck, but Finz in Port Douglas. I'm sorry but I can't help myself!)

I received the following comment, and invitation to blog this if I felt it was worthy of opening up the subject for general discussion - so I have!

I won't name our respondant as I'm not sure if he's OK with having his name put to it, so let's call him Anon.

"As a Hobartian I am ashamed that tourists go here expecting the best.
If Fish Frenzy is as I think worth 9.5 out of ten then Mures is worth 2 out of ten.

Why do they not take my advice and send their staff to learn to cook chips. They seem to insist on making large batches of undercooked greasy soggy stuff.

The fish last time (trevalla) was very overcooked and tasted of fish liver oil. Left most of it. Not a cheap eat.

Perhaps they should increase their prices and employ experienced staff not just school kids."

Thanks, Anon, for your email, and these good questions. Does anyone care to add their opinion?

I go to Mures Lower Deck now and then and buy the Mures Marinade cooked fish, but don't bother with the chips. (I also frequent the fresh fish counter, probably weekly, but that isn't what you're talking about here.) Hence I can't really make any kind of contribution to this discussion, much as I'd like to. My only comment is that I love their renovation and the new layout of the downstairs area, and assumed those amendments would make it a great tourist eating place.

have to agree with anon, single mure experience was not good, and all 3 fin frenzy visits fantastic.

i shake my head everytime, wondering what tourists are thinking leaving mure's. I count fish frenzy as one of my best casual seafood expereince in oz!

BUT i must ask, what is the comment/pic reference to FINZ in PD?

The last letter of complaint i have written was to FINZ. Had a very average food and service expereince there 2 years ago this week. It should be noted, i never received a reply either.

oh well, lots of other good restaurants to go to....

I'll bite. Although their layout is okay, and if you can snare a table outside it's a good place to take a toddler, I personally find Mures LD overhyped and underwhelming. I think that the quality has dropped significantly over the past three or so years, and doesn't offer anything like value for money.

The staff seem disinterested at best, and the whole process of ordering food and drink can be exasperating. I really don’t like to be so negative about it, but struggle to find anything nice to say of my recent visits. I can’t say that I’ll be back any time soon, especially now that Fish349 have gone to some effort to welcome kiddies (which makes eating out a hell of a lot easier).

I have written off fish frenzy, Me and the missus vowed never to go back after getting overcooked chips and TINY portions of greasy fish which cost a small fortune.
I have never had a bad feed or a Great one at Mures. But it is reliable. Maybe it's just the luck of when you go.
I'd pick Mures any day. Don't even get me started about Flippers.
Where's this fish349 jobby then?

fish 349 is in North Hobart Sir G.
On the other corner from Nandos.
Hubby and I go there quite often. It's not cheap but it's certainly been good every time we've been.
We even had a couple of fancy meals there instead of the usual fish and chips and have been pleasantly delighted every time.
I highly recommend you check it out.
The only thing I'm not keen on is the design. It's a little cold and austere. My Mum calls the walk to the toilet Far Canal Road. Very dark and dreary.

Fish 349 for their ceasar salad (made with anchovies, as expected) and their chilli lime calamari. Fish frenzy for their salmon and brie salad and their sea food platter. When I went to Mures and asked for a ceasar once I got cut up lettuce, grated parmason and some french dressing. That was it! Gross. I work at an international college and always recommend to people not to go to Mures because of the high prices, small portions and mediocre, corner shop style food.

Was in Nando's with a junior member of the clan and missus recently, didn't spot 349...but thanks, Christina, will have a sticky beak soon, despite Far Canal!
PS, wasn't to keen on Nandos, but the little 'un though it was Awesome Cool.
Yes, Deb, I think Mures' fish portions are a bit miserly too.
I once asked the bloke who served me at Kingston with a ``Meal-Sized'' offering if he thought it was a meal for a mouse.
He just came back with....all our portions are this weight, etc, etc.
Sigh...but at least they are reliable.
If only Seafood DeMayne at Snug still did hot food. They were the best fish and chips.

Hi Ozmouse - you're right about Finz. Most disappointing food there. I just had to pop the pic in as I have a downloaded file on my laptop of approx 600 pics from our recent PD holiday, most of them to do with food, and sun! I am still trying to re-create my Qld holiday!
It appears everyone is with you Anon, in opinions of Mures Lower Deck.
Mures - take heed of this feedback.

Yep! I was pretty underwhelmed at Mures' LD. First meal out in Hobart. Single diner moi lost the prepaid bread while getting up to get the fish and chips. I wish that I had gone upstairs and ordered just some plain grilled fish. I would be interested to read your thoughts on warm water seafood compared to the fabulous cold water seafood from tassie.

Have visited Mures' lower deck a few times overthe years and never impressed by food or service. Will not return. Go to Fish Frenzy every few weeks and have never had a bad meal. ALways cheery and prompt service from Andrew and his staff! Fish always fresh and beautifully cooked. Don't eat chips so can't comment there.
