WTF? I heard an ad on the radio today for a new look Granada which apparently comes complete with:
new owners
new chef
new menu AND
every Monday is now $10 day there!
Yay! Every Monday, all their food costs $10 except for Scotch Fillet, so the ad told me.
OK the rest of you - Granada has upped the ante and thrown down the gauntlet. Let's see what the Hobart dining scene can counter-offer us to tempt us all away from spending every Monday night either at the Granada spending $10, or at Cornelian Bay Boat House with their $30 night!

Maloneys had a street sign the other day for fish and chips and a beer for $12. Anybody tried that?
Thanks Anon! We're getting a few good tips for cheap eats! Would that I could guarantee it was all quality eats as well.
As much as I'd love to think the Granada has improved I've been told on numerous occassions that this is not the case.
I noticed they're having Schnitzel night too. $10 Schnitz's I think.
As tempting as it all sounds, I've been burnt too many times to have too much faith.
It's their inconsistency that bothers me. Some days are pretty darn good and others are positively woeful.
I find The Carlyle and The Club exactly the same, which is a real pity as they are so close to home for us and affordable enough to take our family of five.
Not worth the risk though for me.
Give me the Boathouse any time.
As usual it does come down to getting what you pay for. I'd rather go out less often and save up for a great meal than to have lots of disappointments.
I'm with Sir G. Get into your kitchen and rattle those pots and pans.
For me the cheap eat place replaces the procedure of buying food and cooking it.
I love doing that but doing the buying properly and the cooking properly takes too long and unless you are cooking for a few the $10 meal stands up pretty well.
So lets find some more cheap eats!
I think Rita talked about the chowder or some other great value meal sized soup at Mures lower deck some months ago and certainly their blue eye marinade is a great, almost cheap, eat.

I do agree that there are definately times when you just want to eat out, and $10 is pretty good.
The Moonah cafe and Bar were advertising pretty good prices for their counter lunches the other week.
$12 for flathead and some other really reasonable priced meals.
Don't forget the good old Shopper Dockets can come in really handy too.
The Cascade Hotel had some out recently which we took advantage of. Pay for one meal get another for $10. Paid about $16 for above average steaks and a mountain of chips. Really good value that.
I have my own preferences and routes for catering to my desires for cheap but good food, one of which I'll share with you today. During my working day, if I'm out and about I'll generally call into Cornelian Bay Boat House to their kiosk, and get a takeaway Seafood Chowder, which is their usual fabulous chowder in a t/a container, complete with the herb bread as well. What more filling or satisfying lunch could you get on the run than that? And it's cheap! Can't remember the exact cost but round $5 - $7. Easy to park while you pop in to get it; there's never anyone else there waiting. My idea of perfection.
That's exactly the sort of thing we need to know!

Dominic's is the the cheap eat for us, Rita, Christina.
Although more than the $10 a pop, you usually get enough for Sunday as well as Saturday.
And Asian Teahouse standards have never dropped in the 20-plus years we've been going and getting takeaway.
We also had a great lunch from Fish Bar up near North Hobart on Thursday.
It was ``just'' fish and chips and I think it was $7.99 each. Fresh, lovely and cooked just so.
Buzzed down to the docks and gobbled it all up there.
There I go being negative again. Damn. Am I bovvered? Do I look bovvered, sound bovvered, am I bovvered.

Well I have put my $12 where my mouth is and headed for Maloneys.
The fish and chip + beer message had changed to a parma plus pot special for the same amount.
It was brilliant. A huge piece of tender chicken breast, quite thick and cooked beautifully. Coated with the obligitory breadcrumbs, bol sauce and cheese.
There is always pressure when one responds to a special and goes inside, not always from the staff but in this case from the other messages inside of $17 specials and $22 full price meals but we both stuck by our principles and had a great meal!

Here's one I'd forgotten. We went to Dave's Noodles for lunch today. got takeaway. 3 boxes of noodles.
2 adults, one 16 year old, one 12 year old, full tummies and still some left over. Fed the family for $32, hot fresh and nutritious.
All dishes range from $10 to $13 each, eat in or takeaway and I'm impressed. Shared with with family in the backyard on a sunny day. Bliss.
I highly recommend the Yaki Udon.
Udon noodlea with shrimps, prawns, sliced fish cake, BBQ pork, chicken, squid, bean shoots, and seasonal vegies in a Japanese teriyaki sauce. Hot, sweet and tasty. For around $11.50 a real bargain.
I guess it is lunch too and I guess they are just working their way through the menu choosing something to be a lost leader, getting people in the door. Not everybody would go for a Parma!
Dave's sounds OK. My pet hate with Asian (and especially Indian) take aways is when they fill most of the container with rice or noodles with little room for the main game.
It would make more sense for them to charge extra for people like me but instead they cheerfully ignore instructions and you end up with just two lumps of lamb and enough rice for a week!

Still can't top Mamma Mia's in Claremont for cheap food NCR. Most meals are $10 any day of the week.
Granada is still a bit to rough for me to be tempted to return.
I agree D. Last time (about 2 years ago) I went to the Noodle Box place in Nth Hobart, the noodle box was filled with noodles and topped with, as you say, about 3 piddly prawns! That's BS! I vowed never to make that mistake again - and haven't!
The thing about cheap eats, I reckon, is that it's so personal. What you call 'cheap' and 'acceptable', may well not be what I call cheap and acceptable. After a lifetime of eating (close enough to 60 years for it not to matter!!) I'm afraid I'm going to have to put my hand up and plead guilty to indulging my fussy gene, and state that at this stage of life I'm simply not going to compromise. I've done it so many times in the past, and now I'm older, and slightly richer than I was as a young mum and housewife on an extremely limited budget, I refuse to accept what I classify as sub-standard food. I will do it every now and then for a specific reason, but generally I won't.
Have to say our noodles were fantstic this time and 8 months ago when we first tried them.
Now I'm fussy, but our boxes were stuffed with meat,seafood, vegies and noodles. We all exclaimed how generous hey were actually. Nearly enough for me to lament the fact that I didn't get enough veg.

I usually don't like to buy any thing I can make at home but I find Dave's well worth it.

What I would like is if we could get together a list of places who do offer the sort of $10 meal we are talking about. And still produce good food. They might just produce it to get people through the door and that is fine.

In the last month I have eaten at Mud, Smolt, Mures upper and lower decks, Drunken Admiral, Ball&Chain, Anatolia and Fish Frenzy but what we all need often is somewhere to go at the drop of a hat when we don't want to go through the process of going and buying a heap of good fresh food then the whole cooking process.
Its pretty easy to get a good meal at a high price but where are all the good, fresh meals that we can eat everyday!
Is that enough of a rant?

Agree with sir grumpy about Fish Bar, North Hobart. A friend who called in this arvo was really impressed by two course special lunches at the moment, $14.50 at Flathead!
P - a good idea. I'll post tomorrow an explanation of what you've just said above, and invite anyone to add their suggestions/tips for those places.
After people have had their input, I'll sum the places up on a sidebar on the blog site under the website link, so anyone at any time can see suggestions of cheaper good places to eat, according to the opinion of the general eating population of Hobart.

The King of Lebanese food in Moonah has a $10 special, where you get the dish of the day with rice (yummy rice with needles) and a kibbah and falafel plus a can of drink! It's very good food as it's not too spicy and kids like it too. Soho also has a great lunch special which is not too shabby. I went once for the seafood risotto (full price $15) and it was huge and swimming with seafood. I asked them to bag the rest for later.
And on the Granada... we only go there because it has kids entertainment in the form of a park. THe food is OK but the fact that we can eat and entertain the kids appeals. The only other places that have this are the Carlyle and the Shoreline. When we moved here we were kind of distraught at the lack of family eating places. In SA, Victoria and NSW there are heaps of family friendly places, from home smade pizza and pasta to pubs with kids play zones and up market kids play zones (yes we have two play zones here but the food is finger food and we used to get breakfast and plays on Sunday with french toast with maple syrup and fresh cofee and fresh juice or the tradiontal b&e with coffee and juice and the playzone also did a pizza a spaghetti night once a month for all you can eat and play, we're not talking high class here but we are talking more than sausage rolls). So what I think Granada lack for in food and atmoshere makes up for in the family friendliness side. We need more ff places in Hobart... c'mon where's the woolshed type eatery with a three course meal and some old time square dancing to a bush band for the family or the make your own pizza resturant for the kids? We are left to resort to pub bistros and Hogs Breath (which you don't want to start me on) to take those kidlets out. So yes, cheap eats but ff eats too please!
I try to steer away from screaming kids when I eat out.So let's have fewer``ff'' places.
We're a bit too sophisticated here for bloody square dancing. Give me a break.

Sorry but most of the changes have been for the worst
they have taken all the made on site deserts from the menu and replaced them with the bought cakes, muffins etc and are charging $6 for them
