Mat and I ventured off to Don Camillo on Friday night before a party as a result various ravings by friends and colleagues over the past couple of months. My mother even said it was her favourite haunt backing in her nursing training days in the early 1970s, apparently this may have had something to do with the fact that it was the first ever BYO restaurant in Tas (may be even Aust?). Anyway, we walked in to the glorious smell of garlic and ‘authentic’ Italian red and white checked table cloths. It was very busy and the atmosphere was great. We had very attentive waitpersons (one Asian, which was a little strange, but shouldn’t have been, I guess). Mat ordered a beer, and I a glass of red wine as well as bruschetta to start. When the waiter brought our drinks we placed our order for meals. Mat the arrabiata penne (he usually prefers spaghetti or linguine but given he was wearing a white shirt and off to a party afterwards he thought he would be safe!) and I ordered the scallapine limone. We also ordered a side garden salad. About 45 minutes later we were wondering where our bruschetta was and Mat had finished his beer and had to ask to order a glass of wine. Our main meals then arrived. No bruschetta. I ordered a glass of wine with our meal, which arrived. Mat’s still hadn’t. He reminded our third waiter of his wine order, who brought it immediately and advised that they had taken the beer and one wine off the bill as a result of the missed bruschetta.
My veal ($26) was lovely. Mat said his penne ($19.50) was okay. The garden salad ($6) was excellent. The waitpeople incredibly attentive and polite, the atmosphere buzzing, but we left a little disappointed. We may go back though to give it another try, but there are other places that we haven’t been to that perhaps we will go to first.
this place has been revamped with new decor and fresh menu in recent years - it is one of the best italian restaurants i've ever been to. not just in hobart. highly highly recommended.
perhaps worth a full review, rita?
LOL but Jess darlin does it serve meals suitable for fussy vegan vegetarians who can't handle a menu unless it offers 100% vego choices?
it has *excellent* vegetarian fare, yes! in fact i have never heard any complaints about the quality or range of food on offer at don camillo. from anyone, vegetarian, gluten-free, allergic to seafood, etc. amazing how some places are professional and skilled enough to accommodate everyone who likes to enjoy a meal out, not just the knuckle-draggers :)
The simple solution to vego's whining about not having enough meal choice:
A) Eat meat
B) Stay home
That is all.
i have several friends who are qualified chefs and don't share your poor customer service attitude. but then again, they work at quality establishments.
good luck improving your range of cooking skills in future - maybe one day you'll grow up and become a chef :)
