Country Chef of the Year

There’s a magazine called Australian Country Style, and they are currently running a competition calling for nominations for Australia’s Country Chef of the Year. Entries close on February 8th.

I have nominated Steve Cumper for this prestigious award, and would love it if others could back this up with nominations of their own.

There is a price to pay – that is that you have to join up as a member to the Taste.com.au recipe site (which takes around 5 minutes) then after that you then need to think of 75 succinct words to justify your nomination!

So – the price you have to pay is to have the 15-odd minutes in your life to spare to spend online nominating Steve – but wouldn’t it be great if he won?

The link to nominate him is here.

God that's a tough one. I ended up voting for Dan Hunter from the Royal Mail Hotel. Food wise, I just couldn't go past him. Michelin quality food. The Lakehouse was right up there too.

Thanks for the link Rita - I've put my vote in. Fingers crossed for RVL!

Thanks everyone who has voted for Steve and team. Fingers crossed for RVL.
Thanks too Anon 3.29 - I'd love to work for Steve but have one thing that holds me back. I would hate to not have him as a friend, so instinct tells me to leave things as they are. Having said that, if he was ever in need of any help, I would be there instantly!
Anon 12.25 - I haven't been to the Royal Mail but have been to Lakehouse, and agree their food was excellent - but I've eaten Steve's night time food often (as opposed to the more cafe-style day time food) and believe it's right up there with others round the country.

Royal Mail is stunning. It's so clean and well balanced. What's more it looks great on the plate. Not one of those places that make things look pretty for the sake of making things looking pretty - and the dish tastes like crap. That really really annoys me.

I'm all over this.
Go Steve.
P.S Rita, finally caved in and bought a slow cooker today.
I know it's the off season but thought I could practise on the holidays until it's perfected.

Yay Christina! I look forward to hearing the results of your slow cooking experiments. Actually last night I made a Lamb Shanks recipe of Purple Goddess' which I printed off 2 years ago with the idea of making it then. Even tho it's taken me this long to get round to making it, it was absolutely stunning, and in hindsight think it is an ideal slow cooking recipe, despite the fact that she hadn't menioned a slow cooker in the instructions. Am happy to send you the link if you're interested.

Matthew Evan's show starts tonight, SBS at 7.30pm (the wine show that follows it is also pretty entertaining, btw!)

He has a blog here:

Thanks Rita. I do have Purple Goddess's blog site bookmarked, so I may have a browse through and see what I can find.
Phil is away in Sydney at the moment and the kids are all doing their own thing so I've no one to practise on until next Tuesday.
Lots of time to catch up with friends and family though.
Also to go through my way too extensive cookbook collection and see what I can find. I can't wait to get started.

Whi is Mat Evans & what is the show about?

Matt is an ex-restaurant reviewer from Sydney who relocated to Cygnet and bought a farm so he could grow and eat his food as purely and naturally as he could. An SBS film crew followed him round filming all the steps he took, and the TV series starting tonight is the first episode of the result.
