Sunday catch-up

A few assorted bits today.....

Firstly, thanks to the suggestion of P, I have added a sidebar to the blog entitled Cheap eats round $10 in Hobart, and am hoping people will contribute when they find somewhere that not only offers cheap food, but that is of a reasonable standard.

P says:
"What I would like is if we could get together a list of places who do offer the sort of $10 meal we are talking about. And still produce good food. They might just produce it to get people through the door and that is fine.

Rita, it can be cheap and still good and spectacular food. Lets find it!

In the last month I have eaten at Mud, Smolt, Mures upper and lower decks, Drunken Admiral, Ball&Chain, Anatolia and Fish Frenzy but what we all need often is somewhere to go at the drop of a hat when we don't want to go through the process of going and buying a heap of good fresh food then the whole cooking process.

Its pretty easy to get a good meal at a high price but where are all the good, fresh meals that we can eat everyday!

Is that enough of a rant? P"

Well, let's give it a go.

Also I have heard during the week from:
*John and Joan Mahindroo, who are now back from their stint in Greece, and are heading up the floor and kitchen at Catch. As that kitchen is John's old stamping ground from Rockerfellers days, he is totally familiar with it, and comfortable there.
*Subi Mead and Helen Bain at Bicheno who have just started up their new restaurant, sip. I'll hopefully be able to provide more details on that, but going on their track record at Left Bank in Swansea, I have no reason to think that their latest venture will be nothing short of stunning and highly recommended. I intend whipping up to Bicheno as soon as I can to check it out.

Rita, the best high quality food deal I have come across is the lunch special at Flathead As I recall it was two courses for $14.95.

You might have to split it into lunch and dinner. Flathead is superb but I don't think there is an equivalent dinner special.

I'm not suggesting Kingston Maccas, that would just show my food related ignorance...does saying the Salamanca Bakehouse saved my night last night was a sausage roll make me sound like a bogan? Or an ironic commentator?

So much more of Hobart to explore...

Well that's another list... the great sausage rolls around town. Let me start with Banjos.

Banjos does have the salties sausage rolls I've ever had.
But their cauli-cheese pies I love.

Got round to Dumpling World, Rita.
Sorry, not for me.
I had chicken dumplings in soup.
Filling of dumpling seemed like some sort of chicken sausage meat.
Broth had no depth of flavour apart from a small lake of rough sesame oil on top.
Noodles were okay but slice of boiled egg did not go at all.
I left most of it.
Tried to get some fried dumplings, but there was a minimum of 8, too much and they were inflexible about letting me try just two or three.
Now I suppose some twit will tell me I'm negative.
Got to have a drink to get rid of that acrid sesame.......

Fair comment, sir grumpy. At least you've been now! I still reckon the pork/cabbage and seafood dumplings are the best thing they do. I had the laksa broth with my noodle soup. Not bad but I've had better!

I reckon they will have a record week!

Maybe that'll incite them to open on Saturdays!

Wher's our next target, Rita?
Rarin' to go.

Ah Sir G! You're a man on a mission now, aren't you?
Tell you what, I leave in the morning for 3 days in the nations capital. I'll leave this decision in your extremely capable hands. When I return on Thursday, I hope to see our next assignment here. Failing that, it'll have to wait till my brain defibrillates after Canberra.

Went to Mures Lower Deck last night. Had the Mures Marinade. $14
It was absolutely superb and the chips were perfect as well.
It was at the end of service and it was amazing to see how well they clean the place at the end of each night. Each of the cabinets were cleaned with some sort of detergent and then hosed out. Water everywhere!

The dumpling place has a new sign outside and is promoting afternoon tea as well as Lunch and Dinner!
Might open for breakfast and morning tea yet!

I reckon they'll be on a roll after all the hoo ha! If grumpy thinks they're no good they must have something going for them

Fair go, anon, I might just have made the wrong choice.
Well, I did....but that's not to say they haven't got lots of good things I didn't get the chance to eat.
I'd like to try something else and hope they live long and prosper. So there.

PS would that be a spring roll.

Another great cheap eat at Paesana tonight. This West Hobart pizza/pasta place has small take away pizzas
from $8.50. Eat in at an extra price. A choice of 26 different pizzas and an even bigger range of pastas and risottos!

We had a large sweet chilli chicken for $19.50, eat in. Too much food for two people and a fantastic pizza.
Heaps of roast chicken, mushrooms and other stuff with a sublime chilli overtone. (if you can excuse the pun)

I think the place is licenced but also BYO and we knocked off a bottle of Sir Grumpy's famous High Trellis Cab sav, an extra $4 corkage.

Great meal, certainly a cheap eat!

Dragon Palace (near the old Brunswick) in Liverpool St still offer their 3 course lunches for $7.50 ($8.50 if you want the banana fritter for dessert!!). It's all very 50s Chinese, but the quality is really very good, apart from the rather over-salty soup. Extraordinary value really. Went with Mum, neice and nephew on Tuesday and they loved it!

I had a workmate who was and I believe still is (he's retired from our office) a fan of their ``old-fashioned'' stuff Anon2.
Must try it.
By the way. I had a great feed at Duc in King St Sandy Bay. It was spot on. Just went in after finding Bund not open for lunch and I'm glad we did.
