Ground breaking news

Rita was all set to reveal details tonight on the blog of one of the most exciting hospitality events to be held in Hobart in living memory. Unfortunately, the best laid plans of mice and men, etc means that there has been a hiccup in the plans, and one of the major players has pulled out, so my news about Savour Tasmania will have to wait for a few days. But…..watch this space……..

I know what you're talking about....... :)

You are not the only one who knows this big news Rita!
I'll let the cat out of the bag if you dont!
On Sun March 1st, a large boxing ring will be erected at Salamanca square complete with night lights, stadium seating, food vendors & beer by Cascade. The event,
'Savour Tasmania, chef, critic & producer, Death-match' will see chefs pitted against critics, critics against producers in a no holds barred contest to see who has the last word on food in the State! The glittering prize for the victor? National, 24 hour saturation media coverage to become the Food Face of Tasmania!

Rita said...

Earmuffs - Thank god you were game enough to let the cat out of the bag! But I hope you're not intending Steve and I and the other food bloggers to be classified under the 'critics' category! There's no way I would want to come up against any chefs or producers in a boxing ring! All the ones I know are WAY more adept at dodging punches than I!!

No Rita, you Steve & your ilk get to hand out oranges at half time as you are not quite legitimised enough to count-sorry no offence intended, just saying it like it is!

Forget about winning this event, If there's any media let alone a person with a camera present, Mr Bruny Island Cheesey Bell-top will shoo it in, followed closely by the Master Bat-Smoker himself, Mr 'Woodbridge' Scales.
Weezily coming up for the bronze would have to be Mr 'Gift of the Gab' Dunn, the bacon-company-man-talking-mouthpiece. No one else has got a chance cept those media whores Paul'I put Tassie on the map' County & MR self proclaimed Regionality, Cumper from Peppermint Velvet Lunch or whatever roadside stall he's working in now. LOL!

Rita said...

Phew Earmuffs! I'm happy to be illegimate at this stage!
Anon 5.26 - geez, can you be a bit clearer in your meaning? LOL indeed.

Anon 5.26 - as harsh as some of that was - it was so damn funny. Having dealt with all of the above at some point there is a certain ring of truth to some of it.

don't get too excited, charlie trotter is a has been and fast eddie ain't much chop either. it could be good.but with a name like savour tasmania it'll probably suck!

Anon. 11:07,
That is seriously one of THE most small minded and pathetic comments that I have seen, a typical tall poppy syndrome effect.I suppose jealousy IS a curse for under achievers, I feel pity for you.

Anonymous said...

I also agree that anon 11.07 came across as small minded.
Charlie Trotter a 'has been', who are you anon to make such a claim?
If you are indeed a hospitality worker I challenge you to say who you are & where you work. Let your own profile be matched against Mr Trotters. My guess is your are not a Thomas Keller or a Heston Blumenthal. Have you worked with Trotter, have you eaten his food, have you even read his books?
Probably not. I suspect your food or service is as anonymous as your invisible profile.
Its a sad fact that many anon hospitality worker-bees here in Tas slag off chefs who have profiles. It must be hard for them to see others getting recognition whilst they go 'undiscovered'.

I still haven't got a clue about what's going on.
For those of us not in the inner circle, can someone (in plain English) say what the hell this is all about.
Sounds like a babbling contest in a loony bin.

Poor Sir G - in plain English - I was going to announce three planned dinners to be held in Hobart on, I think, from memory, 27,28 29 May. 27th was to be at Henry Jones, with Emmanuel, chef from Singapore, 28th was to be at Meadowbank with Tetsuya cooking for the night, and 29th was to be at Marque IV with Charlie Trotter (my hero chef, apart from Paul F) cooking. Unfortunately Charlie pulled out the other day.
Charlie Trotter, in my humble opinion, is the creme de la creme of chefs worldwide, so I was most definitely there at MIV to eat Charlie's food!
I heard they're looking at a replacement chef for Charlie, like Rick Stein, but it's a wait and see situation.
The Sat 30th was to be a Gala Dinner with all 3 chefs cooking at H Jones.

Dept of Economic Development is spearheading this Savour Tasmania event, which I think is great.

Does this help you with all the above 'Charlie' references?

Anonymous said...

Oh Rita, its sounds as if this event might not be considered entirely frugal!!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks Rita. I have heard of Charlie Trotter. But my impassioned plea was for your respondents not to assume we, the mere punters, know what they are talking about.
And who the F is Paul? By the way we, the great unwashed, are often lambasted for being unkind.
Looking at some of the above, we are bumbling amateurs!

Finally know when you are punching above your weight sir g?

Anonymous said...

You prove my point, Anon 4.30. Thanks.
I think you meant: Finally know when you are out of your depth sir g?
To punch above your weight is a compliment old chum. And I know you weren't meaning to be complimentary.
Good to see your intellect is as vast as your bonhomie.

Rita said...

Ex Pres - you're exactly correct, and I'm mightily relieved that Charlie couldn't make it, thus saving me the grand total of $200! What a bargain! Am I $200 ahead?
Sir G - Paul F is Paul Foreman, head chef at MIV who I have many times in the past told the world that he is my toppest chef.
You final sentence in the above comment looks like you're ahead in the points score!

This is absolutely nothing at all to do with this post but does anyone know where a soul might buy gowgee/wonton wrappers in good old Hobart Town?

Rita said...

Hi Charlie Chan - easy question to answer - either Wings in Sandy Bay, opposite Coles in Russell Crescent, or in Moonah, at the Chinese Emporium, on the left (if you're driving towards Glenorchy) of Main Rd, Moonah just as you come into Moonah, next to the service station, which I think is a BP servo, opposite the pub.

Cafe Toulouse closed down ??? did it jump or was it pushed ?
The GFC or just old hat ?

Cool Room

Rita said...

Hi CR - yes they did close down, due to reasons which shall remain unspoken about here.

Anonymous said...

Oh, no Rita (anyone?) we must be told why Cafe Toulouise closed.
You can't leave us dangling in ignorance like this. Geneva Convention on torture forbids it!

Anonymous said...

It closed down because the owners were out of their depth with & could not cope with the obvious talent they had in their kitchen.

Rita said...

Email me privately Sir G and I'll tell you what I know!

Anonymous said...

Hi Rita

I am not sure that you really are $200 ahead in the frugality stakes. I gather the reason you are not spending the money is because this chef (who, like all chefs other than those who supplied the once glorious Fitzies Cafe, is obviously overpriced), is no longer providing this exhorbitantly priced meal. True frugality would be not paying the inflated price even if he were still doing the cooking.

So still some way to go, girl, but hang in there anyway, and remember that Whitey should always be the yardstick for achieving true frugality in these troubled times!!

cheers

The Ex Pres

Rita, I am astounded at your knowledge and wonder who your source could possibly be!!!???

I have been made redundant! TJ

Rita said...

I'm sure, whoever you are, TJ, you are most definitely not redundant.

My knowledge comes from the universe!

PS, good try Rita!

Rita said...

Thanks Sir G. But you could try doing as some of my other regular commenters who like to 'chat' to Rita privately, so have created an email address using their nom-de-plume name. Not unlike my good self.

Ok - love the new blog/website it looks fresh and still love reading it, but can't work out how to view older postings (such as Izey at McDonalds). From memory there was a listing of months and years on the right hand side. This no longer is apparent to me. Note to all - Reading this on a Friday night after another AFT week !
Can someone tell me where to go ? Politely of course.
Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Oops - meant to post this to the post of "Happy School Days Izey. Sorry, see what only drinkig on a weekend does to me.

Rita said...

Oh Anon - I'm so sorry about that. I am racking my mind to try and remember when it was (as in, month) that I wrote the Maccers story about Izey, so I would have a better idea of how to find the post and thus provide you with the link, but it's so long ago, and as it wasn't a review but just a writing similar to the one about Izey starting school yesterday, I didn't bookmark it and it's not logged anywhere.
It was 2007 some time, that's all I can remember. I'll try and scroll back this weekend and try to find the post but won't promise anything.
BTW - what's an AFT week?

Anonymous said...

Looking for old posts? Avoid straining the brain cells and try the search feature (top left corner).

A search for "Maccas" quickly uncovered the missing link.

Rita said...

Thanks so much Technophile (whose true identity I can hazard a guess!). That would be top right corner though wouldn't it? x

Most Esteemed Rita

My gratitude to you for directing me to Wing & Co. Sandy Bay knows no bounds.

My wontons and I now are both completely wrapt.
