Cupcakes reign supreme

Today was the day for birthday party number 5 for young Nellie Jnr, one of Rita's six grandchildren, and she of Sandy Bay Maccas fame. While Nellie gave her Thermomix a good run preparing party food, she commissioned out the task of making the birthday cake (a beautiful toadstool) and accompanying cupcakes to Linda at Big Day Cake.



I hadn't heard of either Linda or her business before, but am now, as a result of having seen her handiwork today, happy to recommend her product to all and sundry.



Judge for yourself from the pics I took this morning.

I didn't hang round for the party itself, so didn't get to see the cutting of the cake, or sample it, but Nellie assures me the cake inside wasn't your standard cake - it was a light vanilla sponge interspersed with layers of butter cream. Sounds absolutely perfect.

Linda trained as a chef, and lives next door to Rodney and Severin at Agrarian Kitchen at Lachlan. She is passionate about her product, a quality I very much admired about her. There are no shortcuts taken here in this product, and I loved the way she spoke about the time, love and effort she puts into her work.

If I ever have a time when I need a special cake, or similar, made, that's exactly who I will be calling.

They look so lovely and colourful, Rita. And, that Mushroom cake house is so believable like something out of a Disney animated show.

I know where to go for my 50th birthday cake now.

Steve - as I didn't taste them, I can't compare them (taste-wise) with Cutie Cupcakes. I think they're for a different market - a more specialised and targeted market. For Nellies needs yesterday, they were perfect. For a wedding, they're ideal. If you're just wanting a cake (or cupcake), and it's not a special occasion, then I would go with CC's. If it's an occasion where I want to make a statement of some kind, or make a big splash, then that's the time I'd go with Big Day Cake.

For the time and effort expended, Linda HAS to charge a bit more than what your standard iced cupcake normally would cost.

Plus there is a delivery charge. My opinion is that any associated costs are totally worth it, but others may well not want to pay that. It comes down to the individual.

Puts my mums 'womans weekly b'day cake book' efforts to shame! Though the figure-8 race track was still cool.

I agree with Forde - the figure 8 race track was very cool - my son loved it! Another that was pretty easy to achieve was the pink pig, adorned with flowers made from marshmellow slices....

My children have been known, even in recent years, to peruse the WW Birthday cake book.....even though both are now into the third decade of life...

There's a relatively new cupcake shop in Elizabeth Street Mall. I haven't eaten any though (I have to maintain this slim and gorgeous physique), but they look good.

I did get the fairy castle and the piano - but the WW cake book would mysteriously disappear after Christmas - my mother couldn't cope with the 3 different b'day cake requests she would receive from us-3 siblings within 8 days in January!

Gee cupcakes are big since the GEC hit aren't they Rita? They are ubiquitous. Sydney has so many shops selling them. But yours are the best i have seen. Love the little grubs.
